This is probably a noobish question but I need some enlightenment.
To make a deathmatch map It appears to me that I would use info_player_deathmatch. Deathmatch maps have multiple spawnpoints, so I am assuming that I would place i_p_dm at all of the locations where I would want players to spawn.
This seems to be half of the info though.
How many spawn points do I need?
Is there a way to assign a spawn point to a specific team color?
Am I just wrong across the board and this is all done another way?
thanks in advance, to whomever, for any help.

Thank you both. I'm not actually building a DM map* I just wanted to fill a gap in my knowledge. Thanks again.
*you wouldn't want to play it even if I did make one...

yes info_player_deathmatch is used (requires deathmatch cvar to be 1).
most team dm games are 4 on 4 so 8 spawn points would be a good number
so there wont be telefragging at the start of the match.
ctf uses team based spawns but not tdm. Dm are random spawns also.

That's correct!
You better have at least two spawnpoints or an infinite telefragging loop might occur.
You cannot assign teams to spawnpoints in stock Quake.
