    Trigger music?

I've finally started working on some things in Quake that I'm happy enough to continue forward with however, I have a question that I'm not sure has been particularly answered before.

Is it possible to have triggers about the map that cue a certain music track within a pkg file and either have it trigger once or however many times a certain area is entered?

What about a cue for when the player dies?

I've been playing Tomb Raider 2 a lot lately on my PSP and I have to say it's been more inspiring for my current Quake maps than I thought.

I kinda sorta know this guy who is also a fan of Quake and Tomb Raider and I asked him if he'd like to do a Quake soundtrack for my levels. Originally I was going to use full tracks but I found that Quake is pretty much fine most of the time WITHOUT music. But I thought It'd be cinematic and interesting to just have little music cues here and there to add a bit of charm.

Obviously, all of the Tomb Raider games (minus the latest, haven't had a chance to play it yet) have inspired this decision.

    Is it possible?

The only level I plan to have a solid track to play throughout is the start map and its nothing fancy. Pretty simple and mysterious.

The cue for dying is leave or take, though it would be cool to be able to have one, it isn't a deal breaker.

Thanks in advance guys n' gals!

just a small update to say i've started remaking a start map. i'm experimenting with hexen II textures. oddly water is a stiff brush with no animation same as the sky. I've also decided to be a weirdo and add a few secrets into the start map. just to set the tone for what these levels will be like, if i get them right.

not overly OMG EYECANDY complex but hopefully puzzling. might not be great for more than one play through but who knows =P

I listen to jazz and death metal primarily, but I also love blues, funk, reggae, klezmer, surf rock, rock-a-billy, punk, classical, alternative, 80's pop, swing & disco

If I was going to listen to rap it would be old (Beastie Boys, LL CooL J, NWA) something like that

    edit:

I got more jazz than rebirth featuring coltraine
this country gives me the blues cause it's rockin like a hurricane

hmmm maybe I should be a famous rapper. I got this word play shit down

I don't listen to a lot of rap, but, I'd say that's pretty good. Better than a lot of the shite out there nowadays =P

And no, you aren't crazy. You're very entertaining
You do get it!!!! I just play the "crazy" card cause no one believes me when I say that I am perfectly sane. I had a psychologist for a short amount of time when I quit drinking a decade ago. She said I suffer from this rare disease called individuality and independent thought. She also said she wouldn't give me drugs even if I begged for them. Which was fine, cause I don't want to be a zombie. Imagine if this was Gypsy

"Hi, so you guys play games and stuff. That's nice. I might join you sometime. I have played Quake before, but these days it's hard to focus cause I'm on meds. I'll be back sometime."

    :::yaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn::::

I like being a bomb with a recurring explosion, determined in my devotion
sweat art like it's always a million degrees, til I've poured out an ocean
break bread with my brothers over contemplation and theory
I'd take lead for my brothers in this nation that's weary
I've flipped more pages than an editor in a news aggregate
spit so intelligent the industry won't have it yet
my ministry is too heavy for a soap box so I bring it to stages
you might rip me a new one but you wont rip me like pages

psssh, IDFK LOL! I wrote the first line before the comma and it just turned into all of that. I don't even listen to rap so I think it's pretty funny that I just wrote an 8 line freestyle

Does this sound stupid to any of you?
Nope, sounds great that you arent making Quake 1 ver 268347686924697426294

Stick with your ideas and ignore all the people that are going to tell you otherwise.

ASIDE: Did you accept my invitation first? If not, why? Obviously this other person doesn't care as much as I do. Where is their post publicly threatening to kill you if you don't accept their invite? My whole goal was to be your first friend and here you may already be crushing all of my dreams. Please respond expediently as I never know when I will have to leave the country due to those that didn't accept my invite.

I know what you are thinking "This mother fucker is crazy!" I concur, but it's incredibly funny if you get it. It's a shame you have to read it. I'm an excellent actor. Would you believe that my birth was my first great performance? I played a screaming newborn effortlessly. Then I had coffee and a cigarette, while I considered how I could have improved my entrance.

PS> I am drug free, this is a fact. I dont even take the drugs that I'm probably supposed to.

Ha! Sorry about that =P I had two friends requests apparently... took me a bit to figure out where to find them.

Anyhow, now that I've got that problem fixed I plan on working on finishing up the level. Its fairly straight forward mainly because its the first map out of what I plan to be 15 or there abouts (16 including start) and I want to gradually increase complexity.

Most Quake map packs I've played save for a few seem to be very heavy on combat. I did a lot of this in Wolf3D because... it's pretty much all you can do.

I was thinking of something slower, restricted on ammo and health and each encounter with a monster meaning something. More about surviving rather than just blasting everything in sight. I kind of want to convey something different. Surivivng traps in the level, keep a keen eye for hidden items like ammo and health rather just having them out in the open. A bit more platforming than that of ID's Quake.

Does this sound stupid to any of you? If so, please let me know! Ha!

I know it sounds a bit more like Hexen II. Speaking of, I tried the HexenTwo texture wad for quake and the skies didn't animate and water didn't animate and it was solid like a wall/ceiling/floor brush. So I went back to stock textures. Any idea why that was the case?

    Thanks!

Haha! I pictured everything you just said perfectly.

I actually figured out the problem. I had copied some brushes for a cave wall and instead of rotating them I pulled them in the opposite direction and it caused the solid brush to become just a texture. The player can't walk through them but the engine wouldn't draw them for some reason. Oddly I knew about this problem, it had just escaped me for some reason, I hadn't realized I'd done it =P

Sure is different than those flat levels I made for Wolf3D haha.

It might not even be a leak as in unconnected brushes. It might be a leak as in some crap sitting off in space that you accidentally dropped there. I had a leak once that was a light sitting like 1000 units from my actual map.

Things like that can happen for the dumbest reasons. Like you drop your keyboard and it ironically presses the exact keyboard shortcut to do something you don't want Or you go to pee and your 5 year old sister/brother/niece/nephew decide to "help" you with your map while you are gone. Then they hear you coming back and decide to acknowledge that you told them never to touch your computer before you can come in the room and catch them. It takes forever for you to realize there are 30 shamblers that are not even on the grid...lol. That never happened to me, but I can see it.

Ah, I knew how to select a brush face but I wasn't aware you could rotate it it's been a while since I went to the toetag site. Maybe I knew how to rotate at one time because it does sound familiar now. I just must've forgot somewhere between making box maps and the one i posted screenshots to =P

I'll be sure to find that leak though! thanks!

@upload map - not necessary, you have a light or something outside of your map OR stuck in a wall maybe

just open up your map, drop the console and type pointfile. This will make an XYZ rainbow that intersects at the problem. It would be a good idea to turn noclip oon before you do that so you can fly around outside the walls of your map. Alternately you could just go in your editor to the coordinates that were provided (-1040 -2160 -16) and see what is there.

cmon, man! (in the timbre of a disappointed friend). I found this in 1 minute right on the toetag site.

No, I have no idea what that is ha. Usually the editor draws a white line in the window mode showing you where the leak is, but, it isn't doing it here.

have anything to do with this?

"No vising performed" is pretty bad, yeah. This means all of your level will be rendered all the time, as opposed to only the visible parts. This is pretty bad for performance.

The compiler cannot find the portal file. Check if that file really doesn't exist. Also please look towards the beginning of the compiler output - the BSP stage of the process should report a leak. Are you familiar with using a pointfile to detect a leak?
