Quake Versions, Mods, Patches and Confusions

ok guys been a while since i fired up ole quake again . I instaleld it and im running glqwcl and seems to be ok. Loaded up gamespy and sure enough there's a ton of mods and nobody seems to be running standard maps.

I also notice mods like fuhquake, qrack, joesquake bla bla bla.

I have a radeon card that appears to run GLquake fine (looks fine anyways) Although I did have to remove that darn opengl32.dll file.

I wouldn'r mind installing a mod that would inroduce cool colors and stuff but some of these are 2 years old?

A also wouldn't mind installing some packs and maps.

What is your reccomendation to me that I should install?

What build # are you using? I know it is experimental, but I'm just curious and would like to see how well it works, although a lot of FTE is a work in progress.

And I've heard that the Quake 2/Quake 3 connecting isn't very stable either.

The word is there will be a new release of FTEQW very soon, maybe they will have this fixed.

That being said, from what I've heard it doesn't do NQ very well, at least from someone who tried that maybe with an unreleased version.

If it worked as a lawnmower, sure... I would recommend it for rendering Asaki's Grass, but I have a feeling that comment is lost on everyone here.

I just know it successfully connects to QW servers and plays smoothly. Everything past that is just shells, nails, rockets and cells to me.

secondly: yes, fte's 2666 NQ client is broken. We didn't find this bug (it was a latecomer). The current SVN version should function correctly again. A shame I didn't test NQ connections.

And by supposedly, he means does, I can connect to and successfully play on QW servers and NQ servers alike in it. And it has a QW server browser in game.

ezquake is the best qw engine at the moment. for servers get ASE or just check out www.quakeservers.net (or did ezquake have a built-in browser, dunno).

Yea I originally started with something called MPLAYER to connect servers with a 14.4 modem I was slipping and sliding all over the place Until QW was created.

Your right though, Playing through normal quake is the shit if you got the good connection.

Yeah, back in the day I tried QuakeWorld but I must have been using the wrong version because my map downloads kept getting stuck on 99% and players seemed to blink around. Modern QuakeWorld clients are a lot fancier than the ID originals, had those been around I might have evolved into a QW player instead of NetQuaker.

But once I got cable in 2002, playing NetQuake on the internet became a blast and I got to take revenge on a few of my LPB tormenters.

Playing regular Quake on dialup isn't the most fun at times. Sorry to hear you have dialup, man.

This is 2006, not 1996. Almost no one uses a dialup modem.

Spirit did a pretty good job of helping you out.

I know he did, I just needed clarification. Yea well I moved and now im back on a modem account which sucks.

I remember back in the day there was quakeworld(controlled the latency) and regular quake(that had no latency protection)

Btw ... if you want to play QW that fQuake package is a pretty solid installation. You should be able to load everything an be off and running. It has a bots option in the download.

And the answer to your other question. In QW, everyone uses FuhQuake or EZQuake -- no one uses the ID software originals, not in NetQuake or in QuakeWorld.
