  • Help an oldschool player turned newb

    I played Quake in Highschool about ten years ago. then I got into MMORPGs. Recently for some reason MMORPGs have hit rock bottom and cant get thier act together and I remembered how much fun this was. I also remember that I quit playing this because of cheaters and third party programs.

    So what I would like to do is start my own server with my 10 or so friends that I know IRL that wont cheat and really dont know how to. Except theres one thing. I haven't played this in 10 years and dont even remember simple commands.

    I'm hoping theres someone out there who wouldnt mind helping me out with detailed info on how to d/l the right patches etc, and setup my own server with more than 4 players allowed, or at the least point me in the right direction.

    Obtain Quake , pick a client (I recommend for ease of setup, proquake 3.50 to start with,see the Downloads section of QuakeOne.com,if you cant locate it Google Search proquake,click on the PlanetQuake link,download and exract to your Quake folder)

    Assuming server will be run via a Windows box...

    Quake is installed on all machines,you can go two routes ;

    1]Create a shortcut to your client, place it on the desktop.
    2Right click shortcut,properties the shortcut.
    3]Look at Target section , you should see something like "x:\Quake\proquake.exe" , modify it to look like one of these

    "x:\Quake\proquake.exe -listen 10 -mem 128"
    or
    "x:\Quake\proquake.exe -dedicated 10 -mem 128"
    that is a basic setup, click on apply and click okay.

    double click your freshly created shortcut for a server. If you chose listen variable,you will will see quake as normal, if you chose dedicated variable, you will see a command prompt that should see something like...

    I recommend you and your buddies throw a LAN party one night,and avoid all the hassles of port forwarding, firewalls,and all the other riff raff of making your server accessible via the internet's,if you want to add mod's and play via internet, I recommend you and your buddies just pick a server from the server list and just play using a server you've chosen,which will be much easier. Chances are you dont have the upload speed to support 10 players at once via internet, but LAN would be 10/100 and very easy.

      Heres a command line example I use for Proquake and Winquake, which are good stable servers :

      proquake.exe -condebug -nocdaudio -nosound -nojoy -zone 8192 -winmem 32 -dedicated 14 -noipx +sys_ticrate .059

      This ones for (14) players. The sys_ticrate you really dont need to set though, as your default is probably fine. Id create 2 shorcuts , one to your current quake client, the other to proquake. If you are playing locally, and did everything right, the application will look like a command type / DOS window you can minimize. Click anywhere on it, and type: status <press enter> and you will see the IP address its bound to. Then connect in your Quake client in multiplayer, or create a shortcut on your desktop, and use + connect [IP ADDRESS] in its command line to get on it.
