Not sure why hardware brightness flashes slow down some clients so badly on certain hardware, but it does.

I had the same issue when I tried to play Quake on Windows 7, and this resolved it. Also, Darkplaces seems to sperratically run like shite in Windows 7. I would delete the config.cfg file to set everything to default and it would run fine, then I would immediately exit without changing any settings, and it would run like shite again.

Add -gamma 0.65 to your command line (play with 0.65 +/- if you want), it should solve your issue entirely.

You really need to state what client you are using. I do know this, if you use ProQuake 4 AND the -gamma command line parameter, it doesn't use hardware for those types of effects so it should be really fast.

But no other modern client has that kind of option, so if this is Qrack (or anything else really -- I only kept the ancient glquake gamma system option in ProQuake for performance) you are probably going to have turn something off if you can't play around in the NVidia control panel and find an answer.
