Help Running quake.exe on Windows 7

Ok, i am new to this forums so hello to all!

I finally found my quake 1 Disc, and i was directed by a friend to this forum for help. I am trying to run "QUAKE.EXE" but, my laptop keeps telling me the following.

"The version of the file is not compatible with the version of windows you are running"

Im assuming due to the games age it may not run.. but theres got to be a fix for this.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    cheers,
    Quake.exe

just coming back after learning some stuff, and thought i would share my experience and my solution. so i followed the dos box tutorial and it just installed the shareware version and said "if you want the full version, install it on windows" and since my PC cost me $2600 (never should have bought it, but it's too late now) i was NOT inclined to go buy another PC with 32 bit windows 7, so i thought for a while and finally it just occurred to me that (it being sunny here the past few days, plus the fact that it was the weekend) there would probably be some garage sales (yeah yeah laugh all you want, i don't care) and went out with my son and my brother to see if we could find any, and lucky for me i found a good condition, still working PC with Windows 98 with all the cords, plus the monitor, and picked it up for 5 bucks took it home dusted it off and booted up (perfectly i might add) then i installed quake, stuck the files on my 1 gig mem stick (as it was only a 4 gig hard drive, and i didn't think it would recognize anything bigger, lol) and downloaded one of those alternative quake engines and started playing. so if YOU have the same version of disk i had (shareware only in dos but full in windows {wtf is up with that}) go buy a cheap OLD pc at a garage sale, or if that isn't an option you might try your luck at a goodwill or something. i'm now playing quake so bye

No such animal as a free Quake, and don't go asking for one here - any "free" full version of Quake you might find will be pirated. Buy the Real Thing please.

That would be piracy - not something to discuss here.
Quake is available on Steam for $10
    QUAKE on Steam

However I recommend picking up the collection for $29.99
    Comes with:
    Quake 1
    Quake 1 Mission Pack 1
    Quake 1 Mission Pack 2
    Quake 2
    Quake 2 Mission Pack 1
    Quake 2 Mission Pack 2
    Quake 3
    Quake 3 Team Arena

so can't go wrong with that.

Sorry if i am a noob but HOW exactly do i install quake 1 from my retail cd on windows 7 64 bit? because all i see in the comments are recommendations on servers, and if i run it in dosbox it says that i am installing the "dos only 'shareware only' version" but the full version is on the disk in encrypted form and that running "setup.exe" from windows is the only way to get the full version, but i get the same error "this program is not compatible with the version of windows you are running" then something about 32 bit and 64 bit versions when running "setup.exe". plz help i really want to play.

    ... just like Frenzy said:
There are tons of different engines out there.

I like to watch this slightly outdated compilation (extracted from Tronyns slides):

Just updating; there are two forks of the Fitzquake engine, both with various improvements:

    QuakeSpasm

    RMQ engine

Quakespasm forked off Fitzquake, and later RMQ forked off Quakespasm.

And how did no one mention FTE. It is another kitchen sink engine, in a similar vein to Darkplaces but probably even more experimental. FTE runs Quake, Quake 2, Hexen 2, and it even loads Doom 3 maps. It also supports realtime lighting and all those shenanigans.

FTE is originally a Quakeworld engine, but it supports Netquake singleplayer as well.

    I agree 100% !
That is my curse and my passion at the same time.
Isnt developing something much more exciting than simply "using" it ?
You, as a great engine dev should agree on it I guess.
I rarely play Quake LOL , but love to experiment and make new things.
Me too! But I DO play the game..

@Quake.exe If you are using darkplaces and have good hardware you can check the "Finished works" Forums, there are lots of goodies in there..
