  • Error Starting RTCW

Now im sure this is not the place to be posting this, but I recently bought Return to Castle Wolfenstien off of Steam. But I figured since they are mostly based off the same engine (Quake 3), someone might be able to help me with my problem.

I keep getting an error everytime I boot up RTCW. This flashed up on the top of the console. Q_strncpyz: NULL src Ive checked all over the web and most of it says that something is wrong with OpenGL and Windows 7 64 Bit. If anyone has a solution to the problem, thanks. My video drivers are all up to date (Catalyst 12.4), so that shouldn't be an issue. If anyone has a solution to the problem, thanks. I reinstalled my video drivers and the game, to no avail. I am not playing on a wide screen monitor.

Threads on the internet about this seem to imply you might not be able to get it work.

    Although I did see this:

"try setting extension limit for RtCW to off. (read it on Activision Support, and while I'd say it's unlikely to work it's better than going "Well that was a waste")"

I don't have an Nvidia card, so that won't work. I guess I'm stuck with a broken game. Lovely. At least it was on sale. So pretty much I won't ever get to play this game? Dang, I was looking forward to it too. Heard it was really good.

I think you have ID's reliance on OpenGL to thank for that.

I used to have the same problem when trying to play Quake 3 or RTCW on my old ATI comp

Its funny, because I got Medal of Honor Allied Assault and both of the expansions, and they both work perfectly on this PC, and they are all OpenGL (Quake 3 engine) games. So this must be just an isolated issue with ID's games. I might be going Nvidia then when I build my new PC next month if this is how this is going to be.

So with ID, they don't use DirectX at all because its "inferior", or is there another reason?

If there is a opengl.dll in it try deleting it.

There is an OpenGLv3.dll, and a OpenGLv5.dll. Is that what you want to me to delete?

EDIT: Nevermind, that got it to work. Thanks Bluntz.
