can't play on ANY quake servers [seriously]

Hi, I'm gone for a week and come back ready to play and something's seriously wrong. I connected to shmack and it was on e1m7 which my computer/modem hates running mulitiplayer on, and the frame rate is ridiculously low and the same couple sounds keep repeating over and over, until a new sound or two comes along and is repeated over and over. The frame rate is about the same as a strobe light on it's lowest setting.
Here's the wierd parts [it gets worse]: even when I move my mouse [to look around] the frames are still strobey/choppy. What's also strange is quake runs perfectly in single player, but I experience the same problem when I connect to any server on any map, empty or not.
Another strange thing is I kept getting hung apps on my IE explorer [kept freezing] before I could even get the chance to google "OMG help me " so I scanned for viruses but nothing came up Obviously I got my explorer fixed, but I'm still baffled and distraught over Quake problem. If anyone read my whole post thank you and thanks to anyone in advance if they can help me out a bit

Baker, I have an older version of Sygate that I use somewhere.

That's nothing... I have had a Quake folder of 4 GB, and other Quake folks have had much larger (I wouldn't want to know the size of Cheapy's quake dir)

Are you trying to connect to a netquake server with a qw engine or the other way?

OK, This wierd *UPDATE* I ran Quake in windowed mode while my task manager was still open (probably should have done that in the first place) and "wqpro.exe" uses 90-95% of my CPU usage [once I'm connected to a server, normal in single player] there are no other programs slowing it down, quake itself is somehow demanding almost all of the cpu power [in some moments total CPU usage is 100%] as if it has been modded somehow to hang/freeze itself, although it doesn't actually crash it did once when I closed the taskmanager b4 closing wqpro. *sigh* this sucks.....

One more detail [in case it helps] When I connect to a quake server the time it takes to connect is normal, it doesn't say 'trying.. still trying.." or anything like that, UNTIL it displays the map name, then I get "client to server keppalive" messages, about 3 or 4, and the console slooowwwwwly goes up. Also when I say something it goes right through and ping displays in rankings about normal, maybe a little higher but not enough to cause whats happening. What I'm trying to explain is I don't think (99% sure) that something is dragging or sharing my internet connection, I think it's soley the quake application [all other internet applications working fine at the moment] and quake is my only program running with no side processes running [at least at the time right before I run wqpro.exe] Anyways hope that helps narrow it down thanx again

Windows 98, right? (I'm just guessing).

If so, that was a real "interesting" operating system. I got "nuked" once by a botter in 1999 (those were interesting times, no IP masking ... caused me to get a firewall).

A friend of mine told me how he had got his ISP account cancelled back in the day because he used a script to display the files on people's computers, it would do one IP at a time.

That had to have been the least secure operating system ever.

    1. Seems like most dialup users don't have a firewall..
