    A plea to server hosts

    Server hosts:

Due to what's probably a fifteen year old legacy rule on my crappy ISP, I can't connect to servers at ports around 26000. Please set the port to something lower like 2600. It doesn't affect anything other than my ability to join the server.

I can confirm that it is the problem, since QuakeWorld will connect at 27500 and in NetQuake I can connect to friends at port 1414.

I don't see why one of the CAX servers can't change its port, most of us use a simple name script these days.

like alias shmack "connect quake.shmack.net:26001" in a blank notepad/txt file an name to whatever.cfg and then just put in your autoexec.cfg (which is also a plan txt file in your id1 folder if u use one to keep ur config from pc to pc) anyways.... pop that in there... "exec whatever.cfg" in the autoexec.cfg in the id1 folder.

Run quake as per norm, then in console just type "shmack" without the double quotes and your rocket arenaing before ya knows it.

So a port 1114 or whatever wouldn't be an issue.

Hell, we can even post a config script or both the autoexec.cfg (blanked) with just the server.cfg file in it.... and just have it in the downloads area... and ppl can just connect via hot names... all ya have to do is build a alias help-con or whatever hot name u want to use to echo out the "hotnames" for connecting to servers an their desc... an ppl can type em.

Anyways... that was all influenced and started by HDZbot on irc, for providing the first server.cfg, i just modded mine since the old servers disappeared.

Anyways... We have more than enough cax servers to change one of them's ports... and if nobody else will i could always right the server script up to date with the shit thats on quakeone.com.

    Anyho... whatever.

    ~Cheers!

I wasn't meaning to be condescending, but it was just shocking to see such a request made. Many people have memorized and/or setup aliases that are already configured, in addition to having made server browsers in-game and out. So, yes, it's a better idea to do the port translation like you thought of, but that should have been said first.

This isn't aimed at you, ninjamonkeyz. You clearly responded with a goodwill attempt to help.
    Well good luck to you

Check everything and see if you can ping that port locally, then see if you have it blocked in you firewall software and in your router.

Yes, let's all change the servers to fit the need of a single player. While we're at it, let's relocate all of the servers to Wisconsin so I can ping even lower.

This is exactly what Baker was talking about. People need to stop being pricks. As soon as I point out exactly why it's not that big of a deal to change the port, everybody flips the ******* switch when they don't have an intelligent answer.

At least MasterSplinter knows what I'm getting at. I'm not demanding anything. If a server isn't going to use the default port (26000) anyway, I'm simply requesting that they use a port number that's a lot lower. There isn't a reason to use port 26001 unless you're obsessive compulsive and need all the ports next to each other (even though you need all the ports open anyway for the vanilla NetQuake networking code to work). This applies to more than half the servers. If everybody did only that, I'd be able to connect to more than half the servers.

    I hear yah Skutarth,

It's just a request. Your not twisting anyone's arm. If you didn't put the idea out there, the idea would never be considered. I see what's going on.

    No harm, no foul.
