  • Does anyone know why this RAM icon pops up when you set d_mipscale to 0?

This is some weird error that I found when using WinQuake, I just have this RAM icon appearing after I set the d_mipscale value to 0:

No matter what value I set -mem -surfacecachesize and -heapsize to it will still pop up with it. Is there a way to stop it other than resetting d_mipscale to 1 (I find it annoying)?

I've added all of those command lines with the suggested values and nothing changes, the RAM icon still just comes up with no apparent reason.

can't you just find and delete the image or substitute it with a 1px x 1px brown image? It's probably in gfx.wad. That would be my guess anyway

Here ya go. I made a gfx.wad for you that no longer has the RAM icon. It has been substituted. Just drop the contents of the zip in your id1 directory.

          [gfx.wad].zip

Maybe it how the memory is mapped for win quake
Try WQpro see if it still exists. Changing the image wont fix the real problem

Well, I'm assuming that it really isn't a problem so much as a glitch.

I have a mole on my right shoulder, it doesn't mean I have cancer. I could remove the mole and I still wont have cancer.

EDIT: Nevermind. The answer was as simple as googling it

                  Syntax: d_mipscale <value>
                  Default: 1

Sets how much detail distant objects have. Values range from 0-40 with 0 not bluring distant objects at all. (Uses lots of ram if set to 0)

So there ya go. Set it to 1 or change the pic - those are the options for removing the ram pic.

                    Mg, it's cool sir.

I was only wanting to find incompatibility with old quake engines with modern os.
I was in no way saying your response was invalid.

                    I respect your efforts.

Oh, I'm good, bro. I think I'm just programmed to talk aggressively (although it seems heightened in typing). 99.999 percent of the time I'm as easy going as they come - I just don't "sound" that way. People in real life hear it different than you read it.

There is a little joke here, however. I said I replaced the RAM pic in that wad, I didn't say what I replaced it with . Since I let the cat out of the bag I might as well show you. It's lame but, if you consider that Grim might have used this wad and that he would have seen this instead of the ram pic, I think it's pretty funny.

                      ::boots up Quake::

                      "You're a fucking idiot, Gypsy...."

Anyway, that was my silly little joke for the day.

all good, just thought u were upset, yet i didnt look into your magic box!

life is too short to get upset. Aggression is for home-invasion and people yelling at your kid in wal-mart. other than that, this is just a learning experience!

@yelling at your kid in walmart

I'm the devil brah cause, if I see some unattended kids in walmart I will teach them how to be bad...it's just true. I mean, I don't sell them drugs or something horrible like that. I just represent an influence that will probably lead to a spanking. Like hand em a skateboard and race them to the other end of the store.

Watch your friggin kids before someone watches them for you!

The RAM icon still pops up even after placing the modified gfx.wad into the id1 folder. Setting d_mipscale to 1 makes the pixels blurry and I find it's better without it. The same icon still shows in WQPro.

Setting the resolution higher than 320x200 seems to make the icon go away, my only problem with that is how small the HUD becomes.

aah the engine is reading gfx.wad from the pak. you would have to either overwrite it or delete it for that method to work. As far as the hud goes I think there is a cvar for that. honestly, if you arent experiencing any performance issues, I would just overwrite the pak gfx.wad with a modified one. I mean, if you know there is something with the ram and you are fine with it it really doesn't matter if you change the icon.

I'm sure you already know but for the sake of being thorough - all I did was use pakscape to get the wad out if the pak and then I opened it in texmex. I hilighted RAM and deleted it then I made my RAM.jpg and clicked file/import in texmex followed by save. The original image was 32x32. I donīt know what would happen if you made it 1x1. Maybe it would work or maybe it would stretch it to fit.

Theres probably little more than a line in the winquake source to comment out to get rid of it altogether. I've built a few engine sources and I dont even know what i'm doing. You could do it.

sorry so sloppy - typed this on my phone
