  • Very annoying relief mapping glitch in Darkplaces

In darkplaces, when r_glsl_offsetmapping is set to 1, I get a very strange glitch. I have used other games with normal/relief mapping before on this computer and it works fine, only Darkplaces gets this error.

Notice the scarring on the ground and on the wall near my crosshair. It only happens on random surfaces and at certain angles. It flickers very fast. It happens even if relief mapping is not effectively working (ie, when not having normal mapped textures installed). Setting the scale does not help. Turning on higher quality normal maps does not help, that makes it worse.

This glitch does not occur with offset mapping off. I am using a standard Nvidia GeForce 760 and my graphics driver is updated as of yesterday. It's happened since the 3 months since I got this new computer. I have tried using older versions as well as newer versions.

This happens to me as well. However, turning that off doesn't completely clear it up for me. Not sure why it happens nor do I have any advice on settings to fix it. I kind of ignore it now so it doesn't bother me much. :/

Honestly it seems like a rare Darkplaces bug and not a driver bug. I've had no other games break in any way.

Show FTE some love. No one seems to fully appreciate what that engine can do.

              FTE is platinum + cookies/beer

Have you ever looked at DP engine source comments

Yup, I read engine source comments... all the code. I'm pretty sure whatever language it's written in will manifest in my head eventually.

Ya got me! FTE is a badass engine tho. Dat Quake 2 and Hexen 2 can be played on it tho! So I gotta give it props!

Yep I read the hell out of comments and code. Have you found the baywatch/bigboobs entity names in FrikaC's frikbot code? I busted a gut when I stumbled on that.

thanks for the advice, recommending me a source port that doesn't fix my Darkplaces problem. I don't want a god damned different source port, I would've asked if I did.

This thread wasn't a 'suggest me a different source port thread', it's 'what the hell could be wrong with Darkplaces thread'.

                      This forum sucks.

Oh come on, you get that on any forum.

Anyway, I'm not sure if offsetmapping might not require actual heightmaps? Do the normal maps you use include heightmaps e.g. in their alpha channel? That's how I know offsetmapping to work. It requires more than just normalmaps.

I might be completely off track here of course, I am not a Darkplaces specialist.

You might try just e-mailing or PM'ing Lord Havoc, if you pose your question in a succinct way with images (as you did) he might just reply. He is a pretty helpful person but he is also very busy.

I decided to email Lord Havoc, thank you for the suggestion.

Doc I investigated this further and noticed it doesn't happen if I use Rygel tex pack (the improved one). I'd suggest trying that out if Lord Havoc doesn't get back to you quickly. It fixed my problem anyway. Also I mentioned on the forum before there are several cvars that go with this that you can adjust that may help.

                              r_glsl_offsetmapping "1"
                              r_glsl "1"
                              r_glsl_offsetmapping_scale 0.05
                              r_glsl_offsetmapping_reliefmapping "1"

Good Luck! It just was never a big enough bother for me to fix but I I finally did.
