  • Quake Engine Development on Windows w/Free Tools

I've been asked before by a few different people if there are free compilers to compile Quake engine source codes on Windows. I wasn't sure in the past.

I ended up asking this question at QuakeSrc.org and expected a "no" response, expecting to hear that you need Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 or later, which isn't free and can be fairly expensive (and many of the would-be developers are young with little $$$).

To my surprise, the answer is yes.

See the details of the response QuakeSrc.org:

QuakeSrc.org is basically the most central location for engine development, it has several tutorials on engine modification and a large forum with tens of thousands of posts:

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

The best free compiler with an IDE for Windows that I have seen is bloodshed (dev-cpp). It uses an IDE with gcc and it has some nice features like being able to import VS 6.x project files.

VS isn't really "free" since you have that nasty EULA and who knows what else. Bloodshed is really free.

When I program in windows, I use bloodshed, mingw, or cygwin depending on the project and requirements.

Yes, as long as they aren't using strange pragmas specific to visual studio (or taking "advantage" of visual studio's non-compliance).

The link mentioned it can compile darkplaces.
