r_ stands for realistic. So all of these make Darkplaces look even better.

tris stands for transparent realistic impeding shadows which is a breakthrough algorithm for soft shadowing.

portals are all liquids, r_drawportals makes sure to render them using the new renderer.

drawworld 0 turns off the classic rendering of textures and switchings to an implicite deferred radiosity rendering where coluors and small structures are re-created through spatial analysis.

You just made it possible for me to virtually study the geometry of a bsp. I can now make highly complicated brushes from different geometrical approaches and study which approach does the least amount of subdividing. I bet this is also really useful for slimming up the map with newskip.
