Agreed. For us to do a community quake rebuild (of which most has already been done) it would be a greek tragedy not to have a single player experience considering even quake had that. The funny thing is nothing special about Quake's single player.. Heck story is really none existent yet its still fun as hell to play and extremely moddable! So I see little obstruction in having atleast a single player experience comparable to quake 1. Does have to be fancy, just there! But I wouldn't mind some good story! Think In the Shadows Mod for inspiration on story telling in game. The start level is basically a tutorial and backstory teller in one. You can tell great story with little words, no cgi movies, or crony voice acting. In fact, the quake marine would never speak. He's much like Master Chief was in Halo 1 or Gordon Freeman.

As a side note: If we do COOP we gotta have Horde mod included! Plenty of examples of that to chose from for inspiration but maybe something more like Gears of War and you can place traps for monsters, laser turrets..

All joking aside, this game is your baby. You've got people from all over the site reading and commenting on it. This is kind if a big deal all things considered. You got the ball rolling, that's one of the biggest steps. And since you're the mp chief, you would have one of the best judgements of content for the project. The fact that you don't specialize in content creation really doesn't bother me, as long as those involved have a fair say in what goes into the project as well.

EDIT: it won't fail, cause if everyone else backs out, imma finish this sumbitch one way or another lol. This is kind of the direction I'd like to see RiftQuake go. Like I said, I'd like to combine elements from what i've already done. Some of the work is already being done. Being a one man army in building an entire game is not time friendly, if we get a team here, it's on.

Make your mark / suggest those suggestions, after the suggestions quit rolling in I'll make a poll. 1 week seems sufficient, if you haven't visited the forums in 7 days time then chances are you won't be rolling in on the 8th day bitching you wasn't around the previous 7 days.

This idea is repulsive to some extent, Quake1 isn't lacking in faithful recreated or remastered / HD ETC ETC content. This SHOULD be a no brainer, but thats Mindz the multiplayer quaker talking. Not Mindz the guy who wants more for this community, be it SP or MP.

Don't get me wrong, I love single player as well. But the original intention of this game (at least what it seems to be) is reviving mp quake. Mindz is absolutely right: there is single player content being pumped out faster than the average Quaker can keep up. In the last month we've had two massive map packs. Seven continues to up the content on custom sp content in SMC on almost a daily basis. quaddicted.com has every mod and sp map you can dream of. Do a search for the latest mp mods, or even just look at the list of servers: nonexistent, dead, or dying. Quakes mp community back in its prime was legendary, no other word for it. I think the goal here is to revive that spirit.

A perfect example is my old man. The one and only game he ever regularly played in his whole life - past, present, and future - is quake. Quakeworld actually, but push all the nq vs qw shit aside for the moment. When that died out, he hung it up for good. Now we rarely play 1v1 over local connection.

I think mp will garner the greatest results, and nothing says we can't add sp support later on down the line.

The only exception I see to what I just said is if a whole team of devoted and determined designers came out of the woodwork and said "we'll take care of the single player." I think we need to focus on one thing at a time here and get results fast.

I see a lot of input here, but most of it is either bashing on the idea of this game, or bashing on the mp focus of this game. What it lacks is a real direction.:

I think the most constructive thing to do right now is decide exactly what the goal is. I think you should open a poll in this thread Mindz and get the most basic, black and white opinions of the community, and go with the winner. The more clear this idea is, the more likely people will get involved beyond simply talking about it.

I agree with GB on remaking single player. Modern gamers wouldnt play it more than Doom3. I also agree it should be DP Or Fte simply because of better net code. Xonotic is close to what would be a remake of multiplayer
But let's stop for a sec and ask 'Do modern players want deathmatch anymore?'

Bottom line people who want to play quake play quake live.
I could make dm/ctf/ca for dp|fte in at most 3 months but will anyone play?

I have the server's ready to go if you want to give it a go.

Off topic: We are working on a Kleshik server for people to come play online. We should see how that work's as it take's DP to play it.

XONOTIC =/= QUAKE1 , on any planet, in any solar system.
I do not see why any single player Quakers would be resistant against multiplayer finally receiving some love, outside whoever made that bad ass updated player model.

If you realize how many people actually play quake single player compared to multiplayer you would shit your pants. I know 7 people off the top of my head who live within 10 miles of me have cable or dsl to play online and refuse because to them "online multiplayer is gay and its the same shit over and over".
But those same pathetic hypocrites play online console games on PS4 and XBOX all the time on games such as Call of Duty and blah blah. I play console online and offline, i play PC online and offline. Though my main interest is Multiplayer for any game i play because i like competition. Running around killing monster's or bot's is not competition. I've been there done that and want to continue my goal of seeing multiplayer make a come back. I wish i could get these 31 player's out of Miami, FL to cough up their server IP address that they frequent and allow the rest of us player's on to join them. Sadly they are a tight group of local player's who don't like outsider's and have been that way for many year's and probably more to come. I also met a guy over 2 year's ago and i posted it on here about the 90 player lan party that was being held in Birmingham, Alabama and come to find out majority of them are just like most of this community single player gamer's. What is the sense of going to a lan to play single player? To share each other's thought's and files? I am not trying to down the single player side of quake what so ever. I just got done playing e1m1 to e1m7 single player under "KQP" Killer Quake Pack. I'm not hating but this idling on a server for hours wasting time has got to end somewhere. We either as a community thrive for Quake player's alike whether single or multi or we let it die as it has been for as long as i have been back (3 years).

If singleplayer is tackled first, then multiplayer continues to circle the drain at the natural pace its going on its own.

tackling multiplayer first would POSSIBLY get the results we are seeking.... I just can't hav this discussion without coming off as a dick so ima say it straight as I can.


Having a multiplayer community to begin with will result in more people seeing this website,which will expose even larger set of players to the singleplayer goodies that continually to this day get pumped out.

Roll the clock back 2-3 years and you'll notice these forums was jam-packed with multiplayer quakers. They was bitching about Admins or lack of them. They was bitching about troublemaker players (I was one of the more vocal people in this department)

I forever see a dwindling community lately, and the singleplayer content just continues to pile up for the handful of users who are using that singleplayer content.

I'd prefer abolish SP Q1, but , then again,this isn't about me or you. It's about a community getting the doors swinging in, not out. Plenty of people are leaving and at this pace multiplayer Q1 will become a niche thing that for example, MrsMindz and myself can enjoy on our own by ourselves. I have joked in the past about when Q1 dies, I'll still be gibbing it up with the Mrs, but even thats a spot I don't want to reach.

Single player is 10x the work with 1/10 the replay value. That's time that could be spent on making the most badass mp game around.

From what I gather, this is intended to be multiplayer focused? Any hopes for single player as well? And of course all resources need to be redone, but would it remain in a style similar to Quake? As in dark, gritty, other world type of setting? Or go more futuristic/alien like xonotic and others?

Why would we try and revive single player? You can't play SINGLE PLAYER with other people. I am exclusively talking about "MULTIPLAYER" to get people to play online more and have a more diverse community of online player's.
I mean seriously what are you going to do in single player? Use some sort of voice chat and talk to each other (dude i just blew this freaking monster to pieces holy crap his meat went everywhere!).. I'm not picking or being an ass, i am just pointing out the fact that what is there to "revive" about single player?
