I just played around with retexturing dm3, but there is the huge problem of all the textures being misaligned. Once you start using real high res textures, this begins to look *horrible*.

-> The maps would have to be remade from scratch. Like RemakeQuake tried to do.

What part of replacing textures/models requires remaking Quake? Romero basically paved a path for us to take, and we'd be lack of word for not exploiting that fact. RMQ without Romero releasing the map sources under GPL would have forced the RMQ project into a full overhaul like I seen in E1M1, did romero GPL the maps in Q1 after RMQ started? Zop has put together two varied versions of DM3 and both turned out just fine.

I think you're technical prowess holds you back, being a perfectionist. Thats fine and dandy,as there is nothing wrong with that. Noting that misaligned textures exist ahead of schedule of someone actually putting the effort in probably done more good than you think.

Single player would require a godawful amount of work - the Remake Quake team tried it and failed, and we had over a dozen people on it during peak development.

Multiplayer sounds doable - just needs 1 player model, 8 weapon models and a few items.

Maps are GPL already.

Sounds could be taken from Nexuiz.

Textures - well, the game could use a flat-colour, cel-shaded look to make this easier.

The downside, like I said, it won't look and feel anything like Quake, so what's the point? You might as well fork Xonotic (cosmic justice!) and tweak the physics to be like Quake.

From what I gather, this is intended to be multiplayer focused? Any hopes for single player as well? And of course all resources need to be redone, but would it remain in a style similar to Quake? As in dark, gritty, other world type of setting? Or go more futuristic/alien like xonotic and others?

It's not. The only thing Nexuiz and Xonotic have going for it in terms of being Quake Related, is just that, a lineage that can be traced back to here, Q1.

The former being a community driven effort from what I recall (Nexuiz)
The latter being a rallying point for all those people who got fucked over.(Xonotic forked off Nexuiz)

What pains me is that having an idea and seeing an idea (such as this one) leaves me basically being a drummer boy. Up front with no real weapon to show for, I just set the pace o_O

Apologies to anyone who misunderstood my capabilities are limited, and by limited I mean non-existent. I'm good at play testing, breaking mods so they can be fixed (r00k + Freezetag comes to mind,lol.I exploited the shit out of it until bugs was worked out)

I don't want to come off as I'm dumping my idea onto the community and expecting them to make it happen, I want to very involved as much as I can, even if in a limited capacity.

I've given this some thought, and here's what I'm thinking:

As an unpaid, rag tag community of quake enthusiasts, we can build some badass shit. But we will, no matter what, be able to compete with the depth and flashiness of the latest and greatest games. The newest generation will always choose call of duty and halo over a quake or quake derivative any day of the week and twice on Sundays, if nothing more than for the graphics. How do we compete with that?

Answer: make it fun. Really Fucking fun. While we here at quakeone most likely agree that a game as fun as quake doesn't exist, 99% of gamers today will not see it that way. And if we can't get the newer gamers to hop on the scene, this project will keel over and die, like catching shots to the gut with a nailgun. Because the quake fans of the world are already playing quake regularly, and if that were enough to get this project off the ground, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

To make it fun, it has to be like no other game. We keep the action fast paced, quake style. The physics remain untouched.

Everything else gets overhauled. The weapon system has to be completely redesigned (this is the area I'd love to do). The rocket launcher can stay the same, but all other weapons have to be redone to compete with it.

All models have to be redone. Ranger goes away (hate to say it, but that's property rights, even a remodeled one). Textures have to be redone, but we have that talent readily available if the high res texture guys that did the retexturing project are up for it.

Sounds aren't a problem, I've been training up on sound creation using royalty free effects as a base (by the time I alter them, they are basically new, original content).

Graphics are a must. This means you have basically 3 choices for an engine: dp, FTE, or Qrack. All three are heavily maintained and upgraded by devoted coders, which is ideal. I would choose one, stick with it, and make it into a standalone game.

The piggy backing is a fun idea to keep the quake world connected, but I don't recommend it. The codebase needs to change for gameplay, game modes, effects and graphics, custom crosshairs, the works. This is what will draw new gamers to the scene. We appreciate the old school feel, they don't. Like I said, if they did, we wouldn't be having this conversation. The map sources are GPL however, so nothing stops us from including pumped up versions of our favorite old ones (another area I'd like to work on).

So here's your focus : new game, new guns, new rules, new look, new everything else, quake mechanics. So it isn't quake at all, but a game inspired by quake gameplay. This avoids copyright issues, allows us to dress it up and make it inviting for newcomers, and draw on resources not available for a piggy backing game. Your promotional campaign should claim just this. We are taking the greatest things of quake and building on it to make it even better, all packaged in a brand new FREE game.

This takes a team, even if it's just 5 or 6 guys and gals. I'll volunteer for weapons, maps, and game modes. I've wanted to make a game for awhile now, and if this is the real deal, with a real team, I'll take the work I've done so far and inject the best of it into this project with full devotion.

Let's get at it.

@Xonotic thing: I've never played Xonotic, mostly because I never heard of it up till a couple months ago. If it was indeed supposed to be a quake style remake, it must have been a big swing and a miss, or I'm just dumb. That's a very real possibility as well.

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer.

But I have just read the Quake shareware license. It states:

1. You may not modify or reverse engineer the software

2. You may not prepare derivative works of the software

3. You may distribute the software only in a compressed format.

To me, this would allow to create a website that runs an engine and prompts the player to download and extract the quake shareware. On top of that, you would then just install a custom map (with custom textures.) Bam, you now have a free multiplayer Quake on that map.

The problem is that there is no way to ensure you're legally safe doing this - a company with a crack team of lawyers could still invent some argument like "this creates a derivative work IN YOUR RAM" so your ass gets fined.

But ignoring this --

- Quake is already very cheap on Steam, so if more people wanted to play Quake, wouldn't they already be doing so? This implies that costing money isn't the main problem.

- A really free version of Quake with completely custom sounds, models and textures (which can't look like Quake for legal reasons) -- would no longer resemble Quake, so what's the point.

It's an important point to exclude Proquake etc. from this project. But I guess once there was a free game with quake-like weapons and physics that had enough players, people would just use Darkplaces to join and then you'd again have the problem of veterans scaring newcomers off the server.

The only thing that could prevent this is a matchmaking system, where veterans are prevented from competing against newbies. Someone would have to code this in QC.

And even then, veterans will just fakenick to get into matches. To prevent that, each match would need a referee who kicks fakenicks etc. reliably because you can't automate something like that.

As for assets, you would only need one map: DM3. Since the map sources are GPL, a recompiled version of DM3 could be freely distributed and thus people could use Quake shareware to play.

Shareware server + recompiled DM3 + matchmaking mod + referees.

In addition, I'd suggest this new mod have additional newbie friendly game modes such as a bomb mode or an instagib mode. In DM3, one bomb site could be at the water and another in the SNG room (or in the RA room.)

Shareware server? I thought the very moment the designs of the maps or the layouts, including e1m1 through dm6 (all maps!) could be GPL'd along side a pre packaged just so long as they aren't using assets that have not been GPL'd? from what I have gathered this includes : textures , sounds , models.

I'm a heavy fan of "The Abandoned Base" but not such that I fall victim to tunnel vision , as the person I chatted with in PM briefly alluded to that same subject, which is a dividing line that experienced players WON'T want to cross. I fully accept that I won't be allowed to participate without some major modifications to either the system that pairs up matches or games versus say,being respectful and pq_lag 100. I'll even do without during the early days/months if need be!

I can not emphasize how much the prospects of breathing life into my favorite game is being divided into also taking into account the current status of multiplayer quake1, I play it as often as possible. multiplayer quake1 is socially broken, and I'm not anyones father confessor or their moral compass. Nor do I want to be....

-Ways to defeat the defeated nickname changing?
IP's is a start , upon connecting to a server a list of known well-versed Quakers could deflect mingling of new players/older ones.

-Quakeone.com accounts tethering into 1 account (think QuakeLive) would nip any and all concerns in the butt, unless someone goes through the efforts of signing up multiple times. This is fixed with a daily approval.

I'll make some better tools to compliment various existing editors (much like I'm already doing with my map compile menu) but I don't see myself dedicating any time to building the game itself. Especially when we have so many people here that are far better than I am.

I also don't really see the point in making a free version of a free game. I know Quake isn't supposed to be free but, It just is and there's nothing that anyone can really do about that.

I checked kickstarter rules and nothing about this project would disqualify it from consideration. I don't exactly call it a "fund my life" as it would be a community of developers like yourself (assuming you're interested) and others on this forum. The money isn't to fund their lives but to fund the project. The goal of kickstarter is to bring creative ideas to the public and to allow them to support such projects if they feel they merit investment. Which means we let the people decide its value. We can offer t-shirts, etc. as rewards, mentioned in credits of the game, and even a special edition of the game/engine that may have features or added content that the free version would not, etc. Just my two cents.

Right now, your cruddy ass two pennies on the ground are highly valued, do please keep your two cents rolling through this post as often as possible. Your idea about kickbacks to backers requires someone like Magnus though (an old inside joke,a Quaker known only as Magnus used to run around the servers telling us how rich is he,blah blah blah)
