All of you are very informed. It is refreshing. I'm nobody to give any of you kudos but, if it wasn't arrogant to do so, I would.

      Another suggested book:

"Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow" Yuval Noah Harari (2015) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuval_Noah_Harari

just a couple of quotations from the back cover:

      - You are more likely to commit suicide than be killed in a conflict;
      - You are more at risk of obesity than starvation.

Good reading, if you haven't yet!

Looks like a thought provoking book, how a set of circumstances may only superficially resemble a different event or have unique characteristics different from a similar past event.

The annoyance I was describing is that many times a government or culture wouldn't get to a point where they would have to weigh those factors.

Inertia is the main driving force in a society.

Was thinking the exact same thing. I read a lot about what goes on in America and the world, my reactions are identical to what has already been said in this thread. Nice to see others being vocal about it.

I do not agree with many of karl popper points of view, in epistemology he is very ingenous, even for "natural sciences", any scientist in the world Follows the method he did describe. so what about History? sorry for the ad-hominem but i believe he is not indicated to write about historical methods of study (aniway, he is a great mind, no discussion).
About Yuval Noah Harari thank you, stadistics are nice, but

@read a lot about world events

I have actually stopped. I'm at the point now where it's real simple.... everything is all fucked up, I grasp the concrescence of the situation and I'm fed up with filling my brain with it. If an uprising starts I will join. Otherwise, I'm just going to live my life and make the best of it. I have an obsessive personality. Filling my brain with a bunch of shit that was planned long long ago and does not have any sign of reversal accomplishes nothing but, making me miserable. They want me to be miserable. I will thrive in spite of them as if they do not even exist. I wouldn't go as far as saying I have chosen to be willfully ignorant... more like I have chosen to get on with the things I can actually control.

I wish I had better words cause, the ones above do not properly express how I consider all of the facts stated here (and more) as a prison... and I refuse to live in that prison.

Yes, I am saying even the words of the facts are a prison and the knowledge of them dictates your actions and state of being. You aren't free to choose.

Nahuel, you might like this one then: "Against Method: Outline of an Anarchist Theory of Knowledge" by Paul Feyerabend (1975)

                http://mcps.umn.edu/assets/pdf/4.2.1_Feyerabend.pdf

Feyerabend was as the same time the most critic and estimator of Popper, but be careful, he also was one of these corrupted academic teachers mentioned previously!

I ve read it, and is pure bullshit maybe for teenagers. I do not like feyerabend because he is a kind of soft relativist and writes a lot of bullshit, I am more agree with the lines of Imre Lakatos and Mario Bunge, curious, lakatos wrote about a kind of "cycles" on science

hahaha is not my intention to be an "i know everything", i ve read the book for an exam years ago, i did get a 8 / 10 of that exam, i was very angry not for the note (8/10 is great for me) but for the kind of "liberalism" on science that the university was supporting. Their intention was politic, with no science you have a lot of marx-freud-nietzsche in the schedules at least in my country. And particularly these philosophers are still readed here. Any discussion in a "scientific" way is defined as "hegemonic capitalist propaganda". Freud-marx-nietzsche, existencialism, gramsci, etc.. are a kind of dogma of ANYTHING, and any philosopher who criticizes science is welcome, even if one does not know very well what is being said.
And is not a kind of joke, or intellectual figth here. Communism in shouthamerica was the cause of many deads, even of starving or terrorism, all the deaths you want. Venezuela is a good example nowadays, you can die there because there is no food. NO FOOD. So is funny when a guy says "obesity is worst than starving" , sure that guy do not know the real starving in your city or country
Then my question is that they have left us so many "anti-scientific" guidelines in universities? pure bullshit, a poor country needs to develope SCIENCE because science is a tool. You need to use that tool to solve problems.
I didnt read mario bunge at university because is banned, i did read it by myself. i am not 100% with he in the ideas but man, i am so tired of left-bullshit-posmodern and communist that only causes poverty and death, really tired. Science is a good way to start.

Nahuel, you have my respect. This is what I meant.

Ideologies and the willingness of people of making good is the cause (and it was the cause) of many atrocities, to quote Popper again.

I simply didn’t like Baker´s video. I´ve found it irreverent and offensive. Like his expectation that the state or politicians can easily solve or prevent these dramatic events.

i agree with you (and popper) there is no "good" ideologies or "good people" at all, IMO there is only just people doing good things, or bad things. acts need to be juzged, no matter what people did it.
No problem dude, i just try to understand all the points of view, all the things are very complex for any of us, and the reality seems very fragile sometimes

Tonight the UK election results are in, and it looks like Theresa May, the Prime Minister, is going to lose her job and the terror attacks are why .

I didn't make the video, someone in the UK made the video.

The video you posted of the response to the latest terror attack, the police did have an effective response.

                              The police had guns.

Depends where you live. In a handful of states, recreational sales/usage has been legalized. It's still federally termed a Schedule I substance. There are 5 schedules for controlled substances, with the first class (Schedule I) being the most addictive and having the highest potential for abuse and no medical value, while the last class (Schedule V) is considered the least addictive, lowest potential for abuse, and DOES have medicinal purposes. Heroin is a Schedule I substance. I think we can agree that's where this shit belongs. It's one of the most addictive substances known to man, and while it's base substance (opium) might have medicinal value as a pain killer either in normal form or synthetic form (hydrocodone, oxycodone, etc), heroin itself is a TERRIBLE choice for a pain killer because it's overpowered and has severe side effects and after effects. But guess what else is Schedule I... yep, marijuana. That seems totally reasonable. (That was sarcasm) Convictions for possession, manufacture, distribution, etc of the scheduled substances carry different sentences with varying severity depending on WHICH schedule the substance falls under. In that regard, the government considers a weed dealer to be a piece of shit to the same degree as a heroin dealer. Luckily, these days, judges aren't exactly of the same opinion, and they tend use more discretion when sentencing people for marijuana convictions. But who gives a shit, it's still fucking OUTRAGEOUS that this shit is still on the books the way that it is.

I'm a big fan of personal liberty. I think marijuana has been proven to be safer and less addictive than alcohol. If people want to choose to use it, they should be able to. It's not going to kill them or anyone else anymore so than alcohol already does.

On the other hand, and I'm probably a total hypocrite for this... but I'd prefer to see it stay illegal. Sounds crazy coming from a libertarian type like me, so let me explain why.

First of all... honestly, I don't like hanging out with dopers anymore. All they tend to want to talk about is their fucking dope. Back when I used to smoke the shit daily, I'd probably be right there with them talking about it. But now that I don't have any desire to partake of it, pothead banter about their "primo shit" annoys the living fuck out of me. Potheads are fucking annoying. Fuck 'em, let 'em sweat it by keeping it illegal. Maybe if the only place they can get it is from the underground, then there'll be less potheads. Probably not... but... whatever.

Secondly, if it's legal, the govt collects huge taxes from it. If you ask me, these cöcksuckers don't fucking DESERVE another revenue stream before they can learn to properly budget and live within their means. They have a bad habit of incessantly raising taxes and squeezing the working class fuckhead when they can't afford the bills for all the crazy shit they wanna do in a year. They need an incentive to chill the fuck out and learn to live within their means just like the rest of us are forced to do when they keep taxing us to death.
