  • The new Mastodon album is THE SHIT. Sounds a little more like a return to the stuff they did on 2009's Crack the Skye.

    • I listen to war songs.

Specifically, the ones made during the Bosnian War (1992-1995), by both Bosnians and Serbs. Essentially, the genre is a mix of turbo-folk, rock and that 90's retro vibe. Apart from those, I also listen to post and pre-war songs by (mostly) the same authors.
As for Croats, I don't listen to their songs, it's just rock, without these "elements" I mentioned up there.

I'll just mention some singers and bands along with their songs:

      Roki Vulović:
      - Spavajte Mirno ('Sleep calmly' - a song for the fallen Serbian soldiers)
      - Crni Bombarder ('Black Bomber', popular in the Kebab Removal culture)
      - Balada o ratniku
      - Panteri ('Panthers' - also popular among KRU (Kebab Removal Unit) members)
      - Zorane
      - 5. Kozarska Brigada
      - Vitezovi Hrabri
      - Smoluća
      - 500 godina
      - Crvena rijeka ("Red River", lol, it's like a Serbian version of Green River)
      - Mlada srpska garda
      - Moja zemlja
      - Junaci iz prve Semberske (oh, this one has an epic accordion + bass combo)

      Prva Linija: ('First Line')
      - Milicija
      - Baterijo
      - Zvone zvona crkve koridora ('The corridor's church's bells are ringing')

      Koridor:
      - Oj Alija Aljo
      - Vojska Republike Srpske

      Sveto Jovanović:
      - Republiko Srpska
      - Kad svemu ovome dođe kraj ('When all of this comes to an end')

      Lepi Mića:
      - Gdje cvjetaju božuri
      - Republika Srpska
      - Nevesinje Trebinje

      Miro Semberac:
      - Jadna Bosno suverena (My classmates and I sing this one at school, lol. It's ultra-offensive.)

And those were the Serbian war singers (and bands). Now onto the Bosnian ones:

      Donji Vakuf:
      - Koračnica

Orkestar 204. Teslićke Brigade (Orchestra of the 204th Teslić Brigade):
      - Zašto te nema voljeni druže ('Why are you gone, beloved comrade')
      - Vratiću se ja ('I'll be back')
      - Istina ('The truth')

(there might be missing characters/letters if this site doesn't support Unicode)

Darn, I used to have more Bosnian war songs (Serbian ones, too) on my playlist, but I got bored of those.
The list is already long enough, so I'll stop it here. =)

Interestingly, these songs even taught me a couple of things about the war itself (good thing I was born after it, too). Best of all, this stuff is good for mapping and modding.

Yeah, I admit that's a tough one to argue amigo...I think I'm so fond of it cause I grew up then...that, and it pretty much went downhill not long after. Kind of the last good decade.

              • I can't disagree. I mean the country from the 90's wasn't exactly "country" compared to what was branded as country from the 50's. But people who grew up listening to country from the 50's, 60's and 70's could still listen to it without going, "OH MY GAWD, I HATE THIS SHIT, WHAT THE FUCK IS IT!?!" But what passes for country these days is horri-bad. I remember back in the early 2000's... I saw it starting to go wrong back then when they let people like Rascal Flatts have their songs on the radio. And then Trace Adkins put out that song "Honky Tonk Ba-donka-donk" and I was like, "... Dude.... are we trying to blend country music with hip hop phrases?... I don't like where this is going, Trace. You've done a very bad thing." And sure enough, now you've got assholes like Jason Aldean who thinks he can rap over the top of samples and electronic beats with a redneck accent, as long as he keeps wearing a sleeveless plaid flannel shirt with a shitkicker cowboy hat, it's still toooooootally country. And then you've got 500 groups that pick names that sound so southernly cliche (Lady Antebellum, etc), and the name is the only thing about them that actually sounds country or southern, because the music sounds like shit they could just as easily play on the soft rock and pop stations. And as for Florida Georgia line... as a native Georgian, I summarily DISOWN them and suggest that the people of Florida and Georgia band together to pass legislation whereby we might arrest them, detain them, and torture them for subjecting the general population to the vile ear molesting noise that they have the unmitigated gall to call "music".

Unfortunately, virtually EVERYONE in the music business is using the technology which has all but eradicated the talent and skill that used to make music fun to see live. Even old outlaws like David Allan Coe are using vocal pitch shifters. Granted... he's old as dirt, he's lived life hard, and his voice don't maintain pitch anything like it used to. He kinda needs it. But even people who aren't 75 year old hard drinking badasses use the shit simply because they lack the natural talent to stay in tune without it.

I'm hoping that eventually the masses will get sick and tired of all this artificial garbage they're doing throughout the music industry and demand that artists and producers go back to the old ways of recording where "less is more" concerning effects like compression/limiters, pitch manipulation, digital processing, etc. But... I won't hold my breath.

                • I couldn't agree more. I've been saying the same shit since the first time I heard Florida Georgia line. Don't get me started on Luke Bryan.

I also grew up in Webb Pearce and Marty Robbins, I love the real old stuff too. The straight up western music like Big Iron:

Same here. My dad used to have Gunfighter Ballads on vinyl but he ended up selling it at some point, which sucks because I've started collecting now. El Paso and Cool Water are also fantastic. I don't know what happened to country but someone needs to find who's responsible and Old Yeller his ass.

                        • Two white blues legends. SRV + Jeff Healey = mind fuckin blown.

Plenty of people have heard of SRV. Fewer people have heard of Jeff Healey. You may remember him from the part he played in the old late 80's Patrick Swayze action flick Roadhouse. Dude could wear a strat THE... FUCK... OUT... especially for a guy who couldn't see a damn thing. Dunno how SRV wasn't completely freaked the hell out when Jeff stood up and started ambling about, haha!

                          Sadly, both are dead now.
