How does the BFG get its number?

Doom had the BFG 9000. Quake II had the BFG 10000. How does the BFG get its number? Are these numbers chosen randomly? Are these numbers significant?

I would guess that it just sounded cool.
Then when Q2 came out they just took it up a thousand.
In Q3A it's the BFG10K, so basically the same as Q2.
Q4 I think It turned into the Dark matter gun because that sounded cooler still?

So, dunno really.
