I would say one of the most innovate games, not the best game though. I don't have an opinion myself, there are so many awesome games made over the years I find it hard to pick just one.

I also think it's just a matter of opinion but I sure loved doom back in the days.
Doom was my first multiplayer experience.(Using modem dial-up)

Logically speaking, there is no such thing as "the greatest game ever." Games are always going to get better... Theoretically speaking, this is capitalism. But in practice, some games have gotten worse. Funny, yet sad... Some games have too many movies or video-clips. Ladies and gentleman, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE GAMING!?! Sometimes I don't care about video-clips. But what I do care about is video-gaming QUALITY! Sorry, but I have to be extremely honest!

While we're at it, here is a fair break-down of Doom vs. Quake:

Game-play: Very close, but Quake won this battle. Eventually, I was sick and tired of the bases in Doom. Quake kept on delivering strange, chaotic, and religious environments.

Graphics: Quake won. Doom tried, but Doom couldn't stop Quake.

Sounds: Doom had better music than Quake. But Quake's sounds were a little more realistic. Nothing beats the sound that comes from a Quake rocket launcher... Quake won this round.

Controls: This was almost a tie... Both games had really good controls, but Quake had the ability to jump. Doom was missing the ability to jump.

Comedy/Humor: Doom was a little bit funnier than Quake. The pink demon was really funny!

Horror: Quake won this round. Quake was scarier than Doom. Not only were Quake's monsters scary, they also lived in a dark, sinister environment. Quake's atmosphere was very terrifying! Doom's monsters eventually became predictable... Doom tried, but Quake was a little bit faster. Quake won the race.

IMO and according to my Steam "hours played" FTL is the best game ever.

It isn't tho'. I just like it a lot.
