    Do you play board games?

If so, which ones do you prefer - the modern ones like Monopoly or Settlers, or the classical ones like Chess and Backgammon?

Which one is your favourite and why?

Do you have any board game software installed on your computer?

How many different board games do you actually know the rules for?

Not interested? Hate board games? Tell us why

I love board games! I prefer coop games, but some competitive ones are nice. I tend to prefer lighter games, because stuff like go and chess remind too much of work.

    I own:
    Ghost Story with both expansions
    Pandemic
A go-ban with some extra colored stones (you should try gess if you never did)
    Roborally (which I love)
The Lord of the Ring, the Confrontation (IMO Stratego done well)
    Fairy Story
    Mahjong (I play japanese rules)
    Creationary

and probably others I do not remember now...

If you like Risk, go find a copy of Risk Legacy and get a regular gaming group together. Different take on Risk. I completely love it. Much better than the original Risk!

Amusing fact, yesterday I started working on a dungeon crawling RPG and found myself basically making a hybrid of monopoly and ultima.

I'll probably find a way to demonstrate this idea to you lads (and ladies) in the future when I make a playable version.

But the basic idea for the gameplay is that you have a monopoly like board of 24 tiles and must work your way around to complete a "level".

For each tile is a card face down from a deck of cards that is reset once everybody makes it around the board. These include monster instances, traps, secret shops and some other cool things.

There will be 4 starting classes with unique pieces (probably 4 colour variants on 4 different pieces, so everybody can play the one they want and potentially this will introduce a teamplay system).

As you progress you get items and equipment that you can use. But be careful, this game is designed to kill you as quick as possible (within a fair level). So games will probably be quite short.

And now my brain appears to be shutting down as I sit here looking at my new system. So I'll hopefully remember to edit this tomorrow, but basically. Monopoly meets a classic rpg. On the PC it's being designed to be more like a single player experience with all of these mechanics happening in the background, but the boardgame would be fun to do a prototype of tomorrow.

Do I like board games? Of course! That's kinda like asking: "Do you like ice cream?" I think that Risk is a great board game. *sigh* If only the map could be a little more "modernized"... What I mean: I would really like it if the map in Risk could correspond to a world map (I'm talking about today's world map). But other than that, Risk is an amazing game!

Theoretically speaking, I think that anybody can create a board game. All you need is a pen, a piece of paper, and maybe a few coins. Your only limit is your imagination.

I grew up with Fireball Island. Such a great game. You'd try to fuck everyone else over by tapping one of the red balls to roll into other players or the bridges they're standing on.

Lots of good suggestions in this thread, I'm slowly googling and youtubing my way through all of them (while trying to get better at chess!)

Now that I've played many contemporary board games, I think of Monopoly and Risk as ancient and Settlers as old. Settlers still makes a good "gateway" game, as does plain Carcassonne.

7 Wonders: I would recommend to anyone- even enthusiasts. It has a simple card-drafting design while giving many choices and strategies.

Pandemic: A cooperative board game where players try to eradicate four communicable diseases- but they just keep coming! It has a very easily adjusted difficulty, so it's playable with any group.

Battlestar Galactica: What I thought would be an awful money-grab turned out to be pretty good. This is another coop game, but it's not easy. Players have to come together to fend of disaster after disaster, losing fuel, food, people, and even morale, with the victory destination inching closer. To make matters worse, one or two players are actually traitorous alien spies, secretly working against the humans. (A simpler version of this game would be Shadows over Camelot.)

Agricola: Competitive medieval farming? This game is when you want to take it up a notch into the euro-type design of a game. The goal is to eke out every point from each of your moves, but such juicy moves will be highly contested and be made unavailable. That's right- if your neighbor has a child this round, you cannot procreate. Unfortunately, I do recommend gameplay videos, since it has a lot going on.

I enjoy and own quite a few board/card games. Though most of the ones I own are solitaire/coop ones since most of my friends are not also into board games.

Even designed a few myself. Even one inspired by Quake.

I particularly like games by Victory Point Games. Lots of really good games from a small USA publisher for usually about half the cost of games from Fantasy Flight.

I also love more traditional games like Chess and am a rather avid fan of Poker.

Some of my favorites in general are:

    Chainsaw warrior
    Barbarian Prince
    Darkest Night
    (original) DungeonQuest
Gears of War the board game
    Yggdrasil
Various games in the States of Siege series by Victory Point Games
    Elder Sign
    Space Hulk Death Angel
    Ascension
    Friday
    Space Infantry
    Field Commander Napoleon

    To name a few

My girlfriend and I play a lot of coop board games because otherwise, well, let's just say we have some blacklisted games.

We play games like Castle Panic, Pandemic, Forbidden Island and Forbidden Desert. I'm sure there are more but I can't think of them at the moment.

We do play some competitive cards games, but they're just the entry level Gamewright simple ones that are quick in case we just want to play a few rounds of something. I don't think anyone here would be interested in Zues on the Loose.
