    Chasm: The Rift

    Hello,

I am not sure if everybody knows about this game.
It was released around 1 year after Quake and therefore had to live in the shadow of it.
Some people call it a modest brother of Quake, but it really has its pros and many fresh ideas.

In the end you must try it yourself to see if you like it or not.
I saw that it has never been really mentioned here in this forum, so I thought about starting this thread.

In my opinion it is a playable game with pros and cons:

    Pros:
    - destroyable environment/walls
    - different episodes with totally different times/ambience (just like Quake)
    - cool weapon ideas (incl. mines)
    - monster body parts can be shoot of (incl. headshot)
    - Best monster ever: zombie with ranged "scream attack" (I Love it)
    - amazing/beautiful particle effects
    - real 3D models/environment (just like Quake)
    - many episodes are fantasy-style
    - nice rain/snow effects

    Cons:
    - narrow map layout (sometimes like a labyrinth)
    - no advanced engine available
    - must be played in DosBox (it works flawlessly)

Many things will remind you on Quake while playing
(I am not sure it that is good or bad)

Here are some media to give you the feeling:

Oh man do I have memories of this. Downloading the 2 meg beta on a 14.4 modem in 1997. It was like a slightly 'wackier' quake. Not quite as grim or foreboding, but I loved that it rewarded you with decapitations if you landed headshots and took off limbs.

In ways it was ahead of Quake1's tech while still being a 2.5d engine like doom1/duke3d. The software renderer did some really cool real-time distortion effects with smoke too i've never seen anywhere else.

I'd really love to see the engine go opensource so it could be ported to modern OS'es. It was to Quake what ROTT was to Doom.

Ha! I played this the other day via DOSbox while I was revisiting some old raycasting-era shooters.

It's a very blatant Quake-ripoff and the influence is obvious, especially in the texturing, color choices and overall design. But it's very well executed.

Interesting is that the engine, being software-based, could do a few things Quake couldn't like transparent glass. Still, the engine is more of the raycasting-type as in Doom or Build-engine based games, it's not really 3D.

I think Chasm: The Rift is one of the most moronic titles for a game ever (Quake: The Tremor, Doom: The Disaster, Hexen: The Witches), but maybe that's just me.

Anyway it's an interesting game and worth a look.

Those weapon models look really nice though, any way to... erh... borrow them? Exe file seems to be self contained, unfortunately.

I had to remove the link. I don't want Solecord to get in trouble somehow. I don't know maybe it is abandonware, but especially in the new SOPA/PIPA/ACTA/Shutting down Megaupload climate, better to be safe than sorry and this site has always had a no warez policy.

Really it'd be funny if you could throw the axe.

You are playing a game, someone is owning you. You run out of ammo. Out of desperation you throw the axe, but miss. Then with no weapon and no alternatives, you make a run for it.

Would be funny to see that in-game.

Back on topic, some of the screenshots look of this game look interesting. I had never heard of this game before this thread.

That reminds me to that one special day, when I first played Quake:
I was so scared, when the demon jumped out of the shadows towards me,
that I threw my mouse away and screamed out loud.
That day I knew: I will play this game for a loong time.

Regarding the wonderful "zombie" monster in Chasm:
Now, that I played around with QC a lot, i want to make the zombies in Quake do the same attack: That "scream-attack" is simply amazing.
Especially with that perfect model animation.
Unfortunately Quake levels are much wider and you would not be able to reach a corner to hide in time. In Chasm, the maps/ways are so tight, that you can do this better.
It is a simple traceline attack-code, just like the shambler uses, but without the lightning.
It is the "invisible" scream-attack that I like so much.

Definitely remove the link - so-called "abandonware" has no legal status and could get this site into trouble.

Again; the company still exists and a short google search reveals that the devs are still working in game design; one of them is CEO of Tatem Games.

You should remove the warez link if you hope to ever get the source released.

Heh only bad thing that this game doesnot have sources, i would like to see it in real 3d with opengl.
    Very nice game!
