  • What is a Llama Anyways? (llama)

I've heard the controversy here and there on what a llama actually is?
Well, I found an old article and put the pages together. Here is what it said..

    Oct 26th,2000

It all started in mid 1997. Our clan, a group of happy-go-lucky pukes, had

been dominating local servers with superior play, firepower and teamwork.

Like all good things it came to in with the arrival of the hacked "stooge

    bot".

The stooge bot was the articially intelligent bot, under player control, for

the Quake game. Being HPBs (High Ping Bastards) we had no hope against this

monster. Quickly our clan was demoralized. We had no chance to compete.

Sitting around one day I, sulking overy my Quake losses I realized that all

I needed to even odds was my own stooge bot. Sure enough, after perusing

enough warez download sites I was able to find a hacked stooge. This is hand

I decided to do two things.

    1) Start using it to thwart other bots.

    2) Turn to the evil side. The LLama was born.

We started playing on our local servers. We harrassed other bot users, we

stormed into servers en masse and dominated them. We made annoying comments,

we pissed people off. They sent us hate mail- we ate it. We named our selves

the LLamas. Llamas are truly nasty animals. They spit on you, their of foul

temperament, etc. Ask any sheepherder. No one wants a llama.

I realized at this point that if cheats weren't made public, game designers

were not going to patch their games. So, in llama fashion, we started

getting the stooge out to everyone we could. Mailing it, posting its

location during games, passing it out at pep rallies, things like that.

We certainly never intended for Clan LLama to get large, but it happened. We

never meant to start a cheating movement- but it happened. We never expected

people to do rip off sites, but they did- hey their cheaters... Really this

was all done in jest and it grew from there. We are still trying to sort out

    the mess from years ago.

We set our expectations low. We realized that most people were just low life

scum looking for a fast way to cheat. That was cool with us. We were scum

    too.

Then amazing things started to happen. Other peckerheads came out of the

woodwork. People sent us fan mail, people claimed to be the Dali Llama.

LLamism: Thus llamaism was born. Llamas are the lowest of low. Total

scumbags. We know and frankly we don't care.

The Future. After tripod shutdown our site (and we got it back up), we moved

it to a pay server. But the bandwidth required to serve up files to leeches,

cheaters, etc was immense. Cheaters aren't the best customers and frankly

cheating is not the most profitable of sites. So we have now teamed up with

blah-blah to help us get the resources to serve up our garbage and perhaps

make some spare change to buy.....games...yeah...games.

Content: We do plan on covering game cheats, but frankly we want to move on.

There are a lot of better sites out there that produce some damn good

cheats. If you do have a quality game cheating site let us know- we are

happy to send traffic your way. Also we tired of doing the same shit...we

have to move on and spread the gospel of left-handed play everywhere. So

yes- we are making content changes.

Note: Some people have asked about the Flash animations...are they legal?

Can we do that? Hell yes we can. It is called parody and it is your

constitutional right. As long as it is clearly parody it is A-OK to do it.

For example we could make fun of Mr. Rogers, but we cannot make fun of say-

You. Unless of course your famous. Then we can and probably will.

    Peace to You All,

    LLama Force

I heard people calling people llamas WAY before the stoogebot came out.
IIRC, i thought the devs at idsoftware started the term...

I thought the story was a bit tall for me to consume for 100% fact. It's a well thought out story though, haha. It just seems excessively grandiose, I mean.

Who the fuck writes/documents such a story and is "Proud" to have been a cheater or the cause of the term Llama being used in Quake1.

          Where is that text from?

          The term is definitely older:
          American McGee
Blue's Quake News December 7-13, 1996 (search for llama) says "llama: people who complain about campers in CTF. In deathmatch it's camping, in CTF it's called defense"

Do you guys still use it in NQ?

I've noted a lot of "Hey guess what I found?" , and the sources are never quoted or offered up.

Now a days we call them "MULE"s, as its hard to pull them away to play 1 fN game! Like you'll have 5 mules observing a boring dm game but none will leave to play ca/ctf.

The story I've heard time and again is the word "llama" being similar to "lamer" which was a term used to describe those who excessively complain of some form of unfairness when they die too often, though it's really just their own lack of skill that causes their own death. This may or may not have been pre-Quake/late-DWANGO days when the term was coined...though I first heard it used in the early Quake era.

                  urban dictionary has this

                  Means: Lamer or Loser

Derived from 'Lamer' back in the Quake Video Game days
"Winamp, it whips the llama's ass"

"That guy is such a llama."
