Are you playing Quake 3 from the CD or QuakeLive? It's all the same i understand but big difference in how to connect and play online. I prefer playing the old fashion way Quake 3. QuakeLive killed the regular Quake 3 which royally pissed me off even though i don't play Quake 3 much. I miss the old day's of Clan Arena. I use to know a guy who lived 30 miles from me who would have mega lan parties at his parent's rental house which was vacant but had electricity. I went 2 time's out of the 20-30 he held and we even played Quake and Quake 2. No one could keep up with me in Quake, I did better then all in Quake 2 but slightly and in Quake 3 i was getting murdered on certain maps lol. I sure do miss the lan party days, between the one's i hosted and the other's i went to. Those were the day's.

The only real failure in the Quake Universe to me.

The one Quake game that I hate to say that I really hated to the point to where I just said to hell with it and simply sold was Quake Wars. To me it was merely Call Of Duty with Strogg!

I gotta be honest with you people... I am sick and tired of all the Quake 3 bashing! Well, I shouldn't use the expression "bashing". I've noticed that a few people have actually praised Quake 3. Please do not take my words too seriously. No but really, I think that Quake 3 is one of the greatest games in the history of the world. No, I'm serious! Even today, I'm still playing the living daylights out of Quake 3. Quake 3 lacked the single-player department, but that was the only flaw of Quake 3. Quake 3 had some of the best skins/models ever! Think about it... Biker: A bad motherforka who rides a motorcycle and shoots bots for kicks. Patriot: A psychotic vampire/warrior who represents the courage of the USA. Cadaver: A dead guy who fears nobody. He lives, eats, and breaths fiery competition! Do not forget about the women models! The women could frag some serious butt! Do not forget about the alien models! Quake 3 had some of the best freakin' maps of all time! For example, Bouncy Map and The Longest Yard are keepers (i.e.: A great physics engine, many acceleration pads, you could use the environment as a shield, you could even use the environment as a weapon, there was so much movement, the possibilities were ENDLESS.) Quake 3 was kinda like Mortal Kombat (but in the original Mortal Kombat, obviously, the characters couldn't use rocket launchers on each other.) I respect all games and I respect all opinions, but Quake 3 just tore a big hole in the galaxy! I do not need to talk about multi-player; we already know that multi-player was great!

Quake 2: A good game. I loved the physics engine, but the enemies lacked some character to a degree. The enemies weren't really interesting. The weapons were not significant. Quake 2 lacked originality. Been there, done that, moving on...

Quake 4: Quake 2's little brother... Been there, done that (Quake 4 was a little too easy. No offense to all of you Quake 4 fans. But Quake 4 was kinda like the MTV of first-person shooters. Quake 4 slowed down the pace of idsoftware's games. No disrespect but I fell asleep with Quake 4.)

Quake: The best Quake ever. Can idsoftware produce a game better than this? The enemies were original and they were very interesting. The weapons were original; they had a fantastic/fun feel. Many people could apply some strategy to those weapons. The maps were epic in terms of exploration. Seriously, there was so much exploration! Someone could have written a book about Quake. Someone could have produced a movie about Quake. Someone could have produced a music album about Quake, oh wait, someone has already done that! The lead-singer for Nine Inch Nails did that! In conclusion, Quake had a perfect blend between single-player and multi-player features. The winner is Quake.

    I agree golden_boy.

Doom III and Quake IV are very different when it comes to overall atmosphere and story. The main thing I am really comparing between the two are the feel of game play and graphics style. When playing Quake IV I immediately got that Doom III styled look and feel. The difference was the action. Doom III was very dark and creepy and used the darkness and sounds of monsters lurk about to vamp the feeling of fear up to the player. I loved how every time I would walk into a dark sector of the game I was on edge wondering what the hell was going to jump out and where it would come from. Now Quake IV was a full on assault from start to finish just blasting away on everything in your path. Although very different from the rest of the Quake games I really enjoyed the campaign just for the action. Plus if you use the Quake II music mod for the game it really takes you back to Quake II when it starts playing "Kill Ratio" during some of the intense action sequences. Also using the Quake II theme song through the entire intro of Quake IV surprisingly fit perfect as if it was literally made for the game. The only thing I didn't like in Quake IV is the look of the player after the Stroggification process. The face and head just reminded me of Robo Cop for some reason.

I find Quake 4 very different from Doom 3.

D3 is more of a horror game where you discover what is at the heart of the whole situation, while Q4 is a brainless linear splatterfest with squadmates and mandatory vehicle / rail shooter sections.

Doom 3 is a timeless game to me, while I can't stand the Hollywoodisms in Quake 4 - musclemen shouting "Go, go, go, you maggots!" and "Haul ass or die!". Terrible stuff.

Quake 4 has a more varied set of enemies than Doom 3 and some cool monster designs though - teleport droppers, iron maidens, harvesters come to mind. Doom 3 doesn't have enough flying enemies, and not enough special enemies either.

It's a tough pick to say which Quake is the best. To me, Quake 3 is technically the best of them just because it was a groundbreaking arena shooter and the engine was just pretty good. But my favourite out of the Quake series is actually Enemy Territory: Quake Wars - team based, objective-oriented multiplayer.

There are a few q2 servers still up and active. I play it once in awhile when i gey bored. I usually play 'rail only' mod in q2, same with Quakelive and some Clan Arena.

    Damn right Mindf!3ldzX!

I learned a long time ago to lead the target otherwise your in a world of hurt. I still have a hell of a time trying to get a good frag count with people jumping and bouncing all over the place with rockets, spikes, grenades and lightning bolts swarming around in every direction. That's what makes the Quake I multiplayer extreme though. Now as far as what Dutch was saying about Quake 2 needing to be it's own game I agree in a way. However looking back maybe id had it planned that way from the start. I mean the Strogg Faction Logo is all over the crates and what not in Quakes base maps. I never got to play Quake II online however because it seems it has just completely stopped altogether. I have a lot of friends that praise the hell out of the Quake IV multiplayer but again I never played online. That's sad that I have the entire franchise and I have only played online with Quake I and Quake III.

Not everyone on here thinks Quake is the only good or best game out of the franchise.

    Quake 1 for atmosphere
    Quake 2 for movement
    Quake 3 for mods
Quake 4 flushed down the toilet

Agreed. Q2 was a great game, I played the hell out of it. But it should have been it's own game, not part of the Quake series.

Quake 3 is fun to play. Again, Sonic Mayhem and Front Line Assembly offered a great soundtrack (especially Hero's Keep track, AWESOME drum beat). But again, it should have been it's own game, not Quake series, where they featured all of their previous game's characters (like Ranger and Doom).

Quake 4 was too generic. It had the feel and gameplay mechanics of EVERY other first-person shooter out there. Basically Call of Duty on an alien planet.

Quake, aside from defining the true 3D first-person shooter genre, is hands-down the best because of it's atmosphere, gameplay mechanics, and creativity (even modern games can't pull off the surreal and twisted shit id software came up with). I won't pick a side between NQ and QW, as they both have their pros and cons.

It always seems the first game in a series is the best. Two other examples are Halo and Gears of War. The first ones re-defined the action genre. After that, though, it all went downhill.

    Quake IV...

Quake IV to me was basically to me to break it down is what Doom's buddies are doing elsewhere while he is sawing away at a Hell Knight with a chainsaw. Quake IV and Doom III were one in the same to me game play and graphically with the difference being Doom was kicking the forces of hell back to their fiery hole while the Quake IV marines were trying to eradicate the Strogg. They should have just joined the Doom and Quake universe on that one since it was damn near pretty well the same game lol. They could have called it "THE QUAKE OF DOOM"
