Hello everyone, I'm a hobbyist game programmer and a long time fan of Quake. I recently manged to take an existing BSP file and create a new BSP file with updated lightmaps.
I have one video uploaded of the map 2fort5r with lighting I baked using Blender's ambient occlusion.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxchWYQ9ufU
It is a lenghty video, so you can skip to two critical parts:
at the 1:25 minute mark I upload the new file in my own BSP loader and toggle between lightmaps only and lightmaps+material rendering.
at the 2:35 minute mark I load the new BSP file in FTE Quake and walk around in it.
I realize this video is very incomplete, but I'm excited to share it with y'all.
When I find the time, I will try to upload a more comprehensive video, one showing the before and after, and possibly blender process.
If you have any questions/requests, do not hesitate to IM me. I look forward to contributing the Quake community and the continual growth of my childhood's favorite game!
