  • Be notified of Quake games when they happen & interact with the Quake community

Slack is an iOS / Android / Windows / Mac app that allows us to chat, share funny images, network as a community and most importantly: send out real time push notifications to our digital devices when Quake games are available.

As some of you may know, the population of the Quakes has been in steady decline and with everyone's busy lives it can often be a challenge to get games going or to even maintain a casual dialogue with the people you once knew in the community.

We of the Quake DM community were very early adopters of apps to notify us of Quake games. We had a unique challenge in that the community was small enough to where you couldn't just expect to find a game at any time, especially for a very niche mod like CTF or DM. The idea was a stunning success and it has allowed us to maintain constant DM games when multiplayer Quake was all but inactive.

Now we're using Slack to take this idea bigger. We'd like to get absolutely everyone on Slack in order to keep the community in a dialogue, network with QW,Q2,Q3 and to keep what remains here from completely fading into obscurity.

The way it works is that there numerous channels that players can join. There are also notification channels players can join to in order to receive real time notifications of Quake games happening. Users may send one notification in the notify channel which sends a small push notification to user's cellphones desktops or iDevices (any device with Slack installed where you've allowed notifications). *The notification channel is 100% optional and not the only reason to get on Slack.*

Slack is a great platform. Users can upload files, videos, gifs, emojis, and chat. APIs can be integrated to post the scores of Quake games. Bots can be programmed to do funny or useful things. Separate channels can have their own niche-discussions. For instance, programmers of Quake 2 could have a #quake2-programming channel. Slack is simply the best system for communities.

If you're a programmer for instance chatting and sharing code in the #quake-programming slack channel, you can paste and store snippets with syntax highlighting and you can even integrate github or your favorite development tools to post repo activity and commentary.

Its sounds good, but how many more of these things do we need? lol. We have Discord which also supports Linux along with Android, Windows and Apple or you can use your browser. A lot of Quake players have adopted it and you would probably like it. Come join the Quake players on there.

Why is your sign up link going to a typeform? Is the slack channel private and you're collecting usernames for invite purposes?

Yeah Slack has no native "automatic invite" (its only shortcoming AFAIK) so I have to invite you by getting your email. Just easier that way.

I've been gaming with the NQ community for some time, and I can definitely say I've seen everything. No one has ever mentioned or used Discord. We've been on GroupMe (not discord) for a long time, which we've outgrown. What's clear is that your Discord is named "Quakeworld" so you're inviting NQ players to a QW oriented group. I don't appreciate you piggybacking on this thread to recruit people for Quakeworld. That's not acceptable. Slack isn't a recruitment tool for NQ. It's to help people find games in their Quake game of choice and to stay connected with the community. We're phasing GroupMe out in favor of Slack and I'm hoping that we can get some Quake games going again. I've seen the effect that Slack can have on informing people of new games happening, keeping communities in touch and growing them and I can vouch for the tool 100%.

He was not recruiting. Not everyone here know's what everyone play's between QW and NQ. Instead of looking past that you had to let him know it's not acceptable like you are some sort of king of the forum or something.

Xage, promote the hell out of your discord!
