QW ? vs freequake

So a question for quakeworld users...isn't there a auto download
feature for maps and pak files that you don't have to get on a server?

So what happens if you ONLY have shareware quake? Does it download
the full quake pak files?

Some QW servers are configured to download stuff from within a pak file. I discovered that long ago, I'd experiment and see which servers would download me DM6 if I didn't have it present, etc. Some do, some don't.

It is usually more convenient to have the map downloads prepackaged, the QW map download feature does not use compression so a 3 MB on-the-server map download is much larger than it's size in a zip.
