  • Hi, New here and its been a while

    I really want to get back into Quake its been years. I had a lot of fun with it a few years back. Which mods should I use to pretty it up a little and get some higher resolution? Thanks.

    I use Qrack for NetQuake and ezQuake for QuakeWorld. they are both the easiest to configure and have some very cool additions.

    I'll list notable features for each.

    QRACK:

    - built in name maker
    - amazing skyscroll
    - assigning skyboxes to specific maps
    - great modern looking decals
    - nice power up shells
    - footsteps to enhance the single player experience
    - really good md3 support
    - 24-bit player skins that correspond with player colors

    ezQuake

    - built in customizable server browser
    - assigning skyboxes to specific maps
    - independent physics
    - multiview support
    - video stream capture

    - mp3 player
    - custom frag and tracker messages

    these are also the only two engines that fix the majority of z-fighting. I requested this fix for both engines, don't know what the hell that is? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z-fighting

      Do please elaborate on what Z-Fighting is,maybe a JPEG upload/link and some Paint graphics editor can force an understanding.

      According to a quick 5-10 second tutorial on "Z-Fighting" based on the Google search results (Bo Knew,Google Knows Now)

      Z-Fighting is when multiple (meaning 2 or more) polygonals ,in a 3D enviroment only, exist on the same plane.

      Quakeeeeed Out Example :

      So, relatively speaking, you can apply this to any 3D enviromental representation,including Quake (has anyone seen this ZFighting in action.Videos??)

      Any two or more polygons occupying the same plane (This can be X or Y I presume?) go through a process called ZFighting,and can be circumvented through a Z-Bias.

      The equivalant example in Dm3 would be Quad <--> rotunda , unless im wrong.

      intriguing, no?

        Z-fighting occurs in most gl engines.. it happens when a door and a wall for example share the same plane.. if the door is open (pushed into the wall) the textures of the door and the wall overlap and the engine tries to render them both -> flickering..
        see screenshot below (e1m2 exit)

          Thanks! I was playing with Dark Places last night and that was cool. I forgot how much fun this game is. Ill try out Qrack and ezquake and thanks for the textures and models, too. Ill be hooked on this for a while.

            I thought putting that wiki up would of already explained it, I was just pointing out the fact that QRACK and ezQuake are really the only engines that have most of it fixed. the first time I noticed it was the area by the quad secret in e1m1.

                  I forgot how great this game is! Im playing through the single player and I have the mission packs. That will last me for a while. Then there are TONS of mods most of which look cool as hell. I also went on quake world and there are alot of people online. I was shocked and very happy. Im pretty rusty so Ill be playing sp for a bit. I love it. The atmosphere in this game has never been duplicated. Its just so creepy.

                        I found out Darkplaces has an effective fix
