  • Most Underrated Skill in Quake?

What is the most underrated skill in Quake that makes a big difference in the game?

My vote: Skill with grenade launcher, and I'm not talking about spam.

The grenade launcher is a single hit kill weapon against someone with no armor.

If you spawn somewhere and the only weapon you can get ahold of fast is the grenade launcher, and this happens a lot on DM4 and DM6, if you have good grenade launcher skills you may be able to engage in a fight or 2 and win while you are trying to battle your way towards a better weapon.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

i'm actually quite skilled with the gl, i do use it often

not to mention the grenade launcher fires slightly faster than the rocket launcher, and also does better against shamblers

i think the most underrated skill is water camping with a biosuit

I say using the boomstick, if you are accurate enough, you can easily take down an enemy if your out of rockets. Or if you want to finish someone off without wasting an extra rocket.

I say grappling hook skill. Many people take the hook for granted and don't know how to "use it properly" - if you can master the hook in terms of movement in battle and movement around the map, you'll totally dominate those who do not use it properly. Just my opinion though...

YES, I forgot about that... The hook can get you from place to place very easily. I'll put it a lot of information about that in my guide.

            Effective prediction shots.
            Timing items.
            Taking the time to aim.

In single player, conserving ammo. Especially grenades, if you are a GL whore (I am).

I like to do 100% runs through the id episodes (though I'm not really good). It's very easy to waste all your grenades in e2m1 because it's convenient (and fun).

Then, in e2m2, you have to backtrack to kill some zombies because you were out of grenades. That sucks.

Same in the graveyard level in Zerstörer.

In SP, I always take out wizards/scrags with the grenade launcher, especially from a distance. Sometimes takes a couple tries, but it's always the most satisfying way to bring 'em down.

I kill single scrags with the double-barrel, shaft or the (S)NG. I'm not willing to take the splash damage from grenades (they're often pretty close).

                  all a question of taste

Grenades are perfect for killing groups of monsters easily (knights!), or killing (or softening up) fiends (3 hits), ogres (2), hellknights (3) and Vores (4).

Another good trick is to use a combination of grenade launcher and double-barreled shotgun. This helps to conserve grenades and spend all that shotgun ammo.

                  ogre = 1 grenade, 2 shots
                  hell knight = 1 grenade, 3 shots OR 2 grenades, 1 shot
                  same for fiends.

best if you have a quick grenade bind, like you should ;-)

Spending time in water, in maps with a lot of water, I spend say 80% of my time swimming.

Hiding, I prefer to hide than be offensive, I often make silent kills when hiding with camoflauge in a dark corner.

I'd say it's not the most important, but the most underrated skill is using sound.

If you use it properly you can time shots by killing players around corners and such. I can't count how many times players have called me a bot because I knew where they were the whole time using sound.

One of my favorites was hooking someone, switching to axe, and then strafe around them in a circle and axeing them to death. Most of the time they have a hard time getting you unless they do a RL straight down.

I'd say strafing, since it can increase your speed, dodge rockets, and then there's air-strafing in ctf. All this is a worthwile skill that can make people live alot longer

Those are all very underrated skills. I have no idea which one is the most useful, but I guess sound would be it. With no sound, you have no idea where your opponent is.
