I would contribute to a free quake alternative. I've already written a fair chunk of replacement code for the QC source. Are QC classes a stable and viable reality yet? Classing out the original code with a more modern and portable version can't be all that complicated. Factory pattern for the monsters, state machine for items..(etc). I mean really just follow the design patterns and it would practically build itself.

Exactly. The 1.01 source is GPL. So is the engine code. We already have engines available to use. The quakeC source can be updated and compiled for free. What remains are the models, textures, and sounds, and several of these have quality replacement content (at least models and textures do).

So really, someone ought to make a package using new assets, and the problem is solved.

Considering all the community driven content here, isn't it possible to make a more or less free Quake of our own?

I mean, at this point could you really call fte/darkplaces/etc - derivative works? There are plenty of other things (community made things) that could be included in that last sentence. How many eons need to pass before this game is considered abandonware?

There is also the other line of thinking. The game is already free. Maybe not legally but, anybody with access to a browser can get this game for nothing and then come here and get better content/engines. Do you really think Bethesda can do a damn thing about it? Their only real point of control is those that want to play Quake on Steam. Their are definitely other options.

It's not really about whether Quake is free. It's about enlightening the steam players that there is a better Quake and a ton of online options aside from steam. In other words, don't bother making Quake free, make Steam irrelevant for Quake.

If you are real successful, Steam would drop Quake due to it's inability to draw interest (ad bucks/related purchases). Bethesda would go belly up on Quake and fighting the pirated versions would just cost a fortune. From there Quake becomes free cause all the players said so. It may never be official, it would just be reality.

All you have to do to make Quake free is make Quake a huge loss for it's owners. An unfightable loss.

in essence, quake will need to be free for it to grow, not really survive. its earned its place. i still see it come up when the history of games and its genres are discussed. paying for it will keep it in the past. making it free will give or more relevance and more players imo.

While i didn't ever advocate for a ban due to his "wrecked truck posts" or any other post he has made, I appreciate the nature of this taking place simply because of the fact that not only myself but also bluntz(crow) is in the trucking industry and i'm sure the last thing we want to see is wrecked truck's. We see them enough on the road and then having to come here and see them too. This is my relaxation while im on my down time and i don't need any work reminder's of the danger's of my job.

That's going to be an uphill battle trying to get a company which desires pretty much only money to release something that can and currently does make them money.

I've never bothered with the "Quake Steam port" but I have noticed a pretty high volume of what's being discussed by "Quake1 on Steam buyers" about not being able to even play the game they've just purchased, it's a damn shame.

Seeing Quake players freed from this oppression of greed would be awesome! Though I agree with Mindz when he basically says "someone needs to organize the avalanche I plan to start.".

I'd be willing to back a petition of this kind though. Let me know when we can let our voices be heard!

I don't understand how your status got changed to pure troll but you used to be pretty upbeat back in the day even if it was still a bit childish, which seems to not have changed... instead it's just morphed into a skewed & chopped version of mixing a child's mentality in with an introverted basement troll. I may not be as active on the forums as much as you guys. But I do agree about this game MUST be free. I've bought the steam release about a year ago, and it was broken as all hell. (Messy as fuck too) I find it awful that my favorite company IDSoftware fucks up a release like this. I was one of the lucky few who got Quakeworld to run. Not GLQuakeworld mind you. But jesus christ not a single server supports that shit at all. I find it horribly disappointing that I spent my hard earn money on a fixer upper that IDSoftware releases a so called "Finish product"

NewDM is a good mod that indeed was developed by Canadian*Sniper, something happened and Monster picked it up, I played with him many times on NewDM even when he hosted it on his own connection. I think this a great idea. Has anyone ever contacted ID about releasing the game for free?? Maybe if something like the above gets rewritten in a cleaner format with explanations as to what is wrong with the Steam download (specifics here) it could be presented to ID.... ???

Precisely the goal here! Except ID isn't the last station, ever since Bethesda bought ID Software, this idea of mine (and others before me,pre-2014) isn't new, but the hurdles faced to reach this goal IS new,and it comes in the form of Bethesda / Zenimax. What was once a simple blessing from ID Software is now a triple fold blessing requirement from two other parent companies!

@Spike , I am pretty sure we are in agreeance that the status quo sucks.Whether its modernizing the product being sold at Steam Store (I DETEST THIS IDEA.) You project these companies/businesses as if they would never consider giving back to a community who has supported their product with unwavering vigilance over the years. That's the Public Relations NIGHTMARE that I spoke of very briefly.

To drive the point home a bit harder and further, Quake has existed without ANY support from the parent company/companies for many many years now. They've pretty much been selling a pile of broken shit to the HANDFUL of people who desire to enjoy the cult classic phenomenom that WE know and enjoy.

You presume (and you could easily be right!) that the hierarchy of the three companies involved surmount to money = bottom line, and that simply isn't the case. Battlefield 3 was being offered for free, which is a AAA title, has been given away for free just recently, by a company who is by far labeled more money hungry than the aforementioned companies. I understand that EA / Origin is merely a publisher, and DICE is the actual company who created the game, but simply knowing BF3 can be given away for free is a glimmer of hope that Quake being given away for free is very much a viable option.

Steam Store is just that,a store. Quake DOES NOT have to be sold, it simply doesn't! It's not this mad money making product it once was. Quake5 will have shit to do with Quake we know and love,the guys and gals who created the game Quake don't even work for ID any more, Quake is the largely forgotten bastard who's name sake is the only connecting likeness found in Quake II, Quake III, and every subsequent Quake released since then.

The only love Quake received is when the Quake character you play (Ranger) was included in Quake III's 'intergalatic competition / time transcending competition' where a variety of combatants all converge to find out who is the supreme gun toting killer.That's it! That's the only ties a modern Quake game (and Q3 =/= modern!)

It is the Original Post (in a chaotic wall of text,mind you,that needs UBER-REFINEMENT) I detail near endless reasons why 'We the Community' deserve a bow wrapped gift in the form of Permissions to distribute Quake the game from 1996.
I'm a complete fn newb as the technical side of things, but if say, some one with your skill set and knowledge of the inner workings and assets that are actually fact based,and not PRESUMED fact based, could be of immense importance to such an undertaking as trying to get this goal achieved,which is Quakeone.com becoming the sole-distributer of Quake the game.

Not to sound like some shitty novel, but if you don't believe in what you set out to accomplish as a goal, then you're just dead weight for those who do attempt to accomplish the goal. You're my primo candidate / target now, you flexed your prowess of knowledge and now I have a huge hard on for tapping that deep well of knowledge that would be incalculable travesty if I didn't acknowledge my weak spot to be fully propped up / supported by your strong spot.

This is larger than anyone individual and as such,any one individual has zero hope of pulling this off! I do this for the community, and while original motives weren't exactly clean cut, it took almost zero time to see the bigger picture. Quake is the bigger picture, I'm just a tadpole in a larger pond of a way more important ecosystem of classic gamers known as Quakers.

If success comes at the price of bowing out to a more articulate, more technical knowing community members, then so be it! Success is measured in my book by accounting for what the goal is,and if I am incapable of presenting the argument's for why Quake should be offered for free in the first place here at Quakeone.com in a neat tidy petition, then I gladly bow out to some one who fits the bill more accurately! Anyone can sow a seed, but nurturing that seed so that it can grow into the goal thats set forth isn't as simple as it would seem, and I fully acknowledge this. If anything I'm good at digging holes and propagating idea's!

@Wicked, glad you noticed! I said I would spearhead this subject in our conversation and I wasn't bullshitting you. Clearly I have given extensive thought. The one thing I lack is the tactful capacity to remain level headed, not letting opinion and emotion to rule what makes it in such a petition.
