if they do ever do it, it would be part of some promotion for quake5 or whatever, they're a company, you're not gonna see them do it for any other reason.

what are you actually trying to achieve here? to get people able to play quake for free, to bitch about the steam version, or to actually try to improve things?
the first isn't going to happen. the second isn't helpful (on its own). the third is good, but needs to be done the right way.

you could request for an awareness of 3rd party engines, like for instance providing the music tracks in a format that can actually be used by them, or figuring out some way to get the steam launcher to invoke a 3rd party engine to play the game with instead of the crusty old versions.
maybe provide them with a few easily-auditable diffs to fix the various issues that make the crusty versions unusable (dep fix, extensions length limit, 8bit textures are the 3 that come to mind). ultimately however, don't expect them to single out a single 3rd party engine (if they'd done that, we'd probably be stuck with people trying to use tenebrae instead...).

I think this a great idea. Has anyone ever contacted ID about releasing the game for free?? Maybe if something like the above gets rewritten in a cleaner format with explanations as to what is wrong with the Steam download (specifics here) it could be presented to ID.... ???
