  • Map Jam 2 - news item?

The func forum community recently got together and made an IK Blue/White inspired 8 map pack which works with standard Quake (no extra mod).

Can someone add this to the front page news?

Man, you guys are architectural geniuses. If I had gazillions of dollars, I would pay y'all to invent a house for me and then I would pay some mexicans to build it...

always love IKblue & IKwhite themed maps and temples and such,
so im definitely going to have to download these and play them when i get back from vacation in week!

cant wait to play these when i get back from vacation

                .

                EDIT:
does the map-pack come with a custom start-map?
if not, i might whip up one for this mapset as well when i get back from vacation in a week

                .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
                > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

There was discussion on a start map talisa but with some of the custom mapping "tricks", rune usage and such, they decided not to include one! You can do what ever you like obviously, it was just their reasoning that returning to a start map after completing a jam2_(authors_name) map wouldn't remove all weapons and runes etc. Which could possibly "break" the functionality of the next map played.

They look lovely. Clean lines and lots of symmetry.

When it says "works with the standard quake", I guess there not talking about the screenshots here?
Maybe Darkplaces for those skyboxes and fog?

                    Really nice work.

                      @Adam

There are a few more faithful-oriented engines that support skyboxes and fog, such as QuakeSpasm and I believe FitzQuake.

When they say standard Quake, I believe they refer to the original id1 progs.dat, meaning these maps will run without a mod.

                        Oh, ok.

                        What makes them more faithful?
Just wondering, As I don't know.

My guess would be that they have less bells and whistles, are strictly only for running quake mods or may be even a straight update (with no extras), made to run on modern hardware?

I was recommended Darkplaces years ago and never experimented with the other engines.

eyup, thats what they mean with 'faithfull'
engines that are mostly made to just be updates of the original engines but without fancy bells & whistles, and with the intention to stay as close to original dosquake's look and feel as possible

darkplaces is a wonderfull engine, its by far my engine of choice cuz of all the features and all the fancy HD features it supports like RT-lights and shaders and such.

but some people shy away from those engines cuz they feel to fancy and they prefer engines which stick with original look and feel of dosquake, and some people even go as far as calling all the fancy features darkplaces support blasphemy or such (jk)

FTE is another great advanced engine, and Qrack has a lot of nice features as well.

My favorite faithful engine is QuakeSpasm, mostly because it really agrees with my dinosaur PC lol.

I'm kind of a rare breed I suppose, as I really enjoy the fancier stuff for Quake as well. Depends on my mood.

are strictly only for running quake mods
You'll find out quickly that unless your mod is very, very basic (meaning it sticks to the old-school Quake formula), there will be irregularities between engines, even 'faithful' engines that run under similar sets of function. I tested my mod on several engines and only two handled it without problems: QuakeSpasm and DarkPlaces. That doesn't mean the others are broken by any means at all, it just means there are slight differences that are hard to keep consistent over several engines.

I really like Darkplaces too, I don't use any of the extra stuff it can do. Maybe one day.
I will be learning Unity at some point. I guess some people may consider that blasphemy.
                              =)

I just looked up FTEQW.com, it states that they have implemented some Darkplaces compatibility fixes in the new version.
Darkplaces compatibility, cool. I will check it out.

In my shed, in the part that is done out like an office, is a PC.
It's a very special machine, spray painted black (gloss not matt) it sits in wait.
Under the hood is a P200, 512mb of SD (way too much!), A matrox card and.....wait for it.....steady now.... A 4mb Monster Voodoo1 card.

Jealous, I know, she is amazing.
"Matilda" is for retro Quake time. Pure Dos or w98se GLversion.
