Preview: DarkPlaces Launcher



Sooner or later, I will have this done. I have somewhere in the range of 100 .pk3 files sitting in a folder (which I made in July and had expected to have this project done back then -- ) and the theme of this is to allow you to select a combination of weapon models and custom textures, along with some elementary commandline settings (most settings can be done in-game with DarkPlaces, like the resolution etc.)

This item will be exclusively for deathmatch settings, which get segregated to a gamedir as to not potentially intefere with single player usage of DarkPlaces.

None of the setup of this is final in any way, but the main goal of this is to let existing Quake players use DarkPlaces as a high performance substitute for ProQuake and to let players see exactly how fast/accurate/smooth DarkPlaces can be for internet play -- Monster isn't lying, nor am I when we talk about how smooth it plays over the internet and how great the aim and mousemovement really is.

I might try to adjust the name a little without making it too wordy. This launcher isn't a "general interest" DarkPlaces launcher and doesn't offer anything for non-online usage except some nice bot practice , but at the moment my lack of creativity isn't helping much in the naming department.

A couple of other difficult decisions have to be made (servers list -- I'd prefer for it to be "global" Q1/DP/QW, but that's essentially impossible, which troubles me a little becase the alternative is a biased list, which I'm not comfortable with, but I'm less comfortable not including one at all. --- sigh).

On another note:

Some things I've spotted in the more recent releases of DarkPlaces beta:

1. ping in scoreboard for standard Quake servers
2. elimination of occasional difficulty connecting to ProQuake servers
3. bestweapon support

I've tried all 3 of the above and they work great.

A weapon model selector screen to easily customize weapon models. The above screenshot has them all labelled as "Quake Default", which of course is wrong because I haven't finished setting up that part.

That's cool. But why 2x Shotgun? Why not Super? or atleast S.Shotgun

I thought about it ... maybe I will.

I don't think that is the actual official name of the weapon, which is "the double-barrelled shotgun" ... but that's ok, I don't call the LG the "the thunderbolt" either, heheh

And this is just about done. +/- motivation to wrap up remaining small things.

You can customize weapon models and texture packs (all provided) by clicking on a button and then clicking on the image of the set you want.

Those CS style weapons may actually look good in the DP mod since that's where the bullets come from

Those weapons make no sense in regular quake. Bullets come from the center
