  • Quick Quake Help (getting back in after 6 years)

    October 22, 2013

    Hey all,

I used to be a frequent player. Had Q1 where I could scan/ join servers with a "gamespy" application which would show me the number of online players on each server. All I had to do was click whichever server I wanted to join.

Getting back to quake after a long time out of it. I like deathmatch servers. I am trying to figure out how to set up Quake on a new computer, I spent about 45 minutes reading different help files the other night, but just cannot find a "quick guide" to what I need:

If such a comprehensive guide exists, please direct my attention to it.

    1. I *think* I can find my old disks for the game, but if not, need download.
    2. what is the best "update" for graphics I whould run, (did we used to call these quake-engines?) and where/ how do I install it?
    3. what software helps me scan/ join servers?
    4. (finally) I used to have a bunch of "quick keys" hot linked for smart assed speech comments. Is there a guide to remind me how to do this (or perhaps transfer old files from my old computer?)

    1. I *think* I can find my old disks for the game, but if not, need download.
If you can find your old installation, copying the install directory from your old drive to your current system may be the path of least pain. Failing that you could try and locate your Paks (Pak0, pak1), install the shareware version drop your original paks in, upgrade to a new engine and you should be good to go... hopefully . There are a few links here that may help
    2. what is the best "update" for graphics I whould run, (did we used to call these quake-engines?) and where/ how do I install it?
If you have the hardware to support it you might consider Darkplaces, Qrack or EngineX which all have links on this site. If you go down the darkplaces route you might also consider Seven's amazing SMC add on for it. Look at the accompanying thread on the forum for more information.
    3. what software helps me scan/ join servers?
Later Engines such as Proquake and QRack have a build in Server Browser. You could also consider using Polarites server script which is quick and easy . Failing that you can always use the live server browser on this site and connect to any server you like. fortunately your old haunt of Quake.Shmack.net is still going and the Runequake plus mod that used to be on the Fear server is currently over on newyork.servequake.com:26010

    4. (finally) I used to have a bunch of "quick keys" hot linked for smart assed speech comments. Is there a guide to remind me how to do this (or perhaps transfer old files from my old computer?)
Usually it's just a case of binds. Eg put something in your config.cfg along the lines of Bind X "say He is nekkid as a jay bird" and from then on every time you press x that will be spammed.

    Hope this helps

Delete opengl.dll and the glide.dll from the quake folder after you install the game.

          Hey all,

I am trying to install dark places on a laptop, and seem to be having problems with the cfg transfer working. I installed quake off the original disk, then copied the following off my desktop:

in the most recent version of darkplaces, in the id1 folder, I have the config cfg

          darkplacesenginewindows64only20140513/ID1/config.cfg

and all my old binds for things like mouse/hook, taunts, rune key binds and my player name...etc are all on that cfg. But when I run the game, none of those binds seem to be working.

Is there a way to "Activate" the dp engine to look for the cfg folder?

I am perplexed why this isn't working...I must have missed a step.

            Hi Nekkid

As mentioned in game it's against my better judgement to help you with your taunting again but one suggestion would be to try copy and pasting your taunts to a text file called taunts.cfg, place it somewhere central like Quake\id1 and then try executing it from within Darkplaces eg exec id/taunts.cfg. If that is successful you should be able to add a line to the end of your Darkplaces config to execute the taunts.cfg and only have to modify the one taunts file.

            Kind regards

              @QuakeNekkid

Darkplaces will copy the first config and in windows 64 bit will place it at this location

              C:/Users/Username/SavedGames/darkplaces/id1/config.cfg

This is the it will load by default. You can edit this one or just place your current config.cfg into a file called autoexec.cfg and place it in your id1 folder. Autoexec.cfg files will be executed automatically when you start up the game and will override other binds. The autoexec.cfg should go in your quake/id1 folder tho you could also place it in the
              C:/Users/Username/SavedGames/darkplaces/id1/

It should read it from either location. But by default it will use the config.cfg from the savedgames folder. If Darkplaces is Achilles this is its Achilles's heel. Hope this helps! Happy Quakin

Primal, Burns..... thank you very much. Issue solved with your suggestions. I had NO IDEA about the savedgames/dp/id1 issue.... that was surprising to find!

saved my old config.cfg over that file and voila!

NOW with a lap top and desktop, my 8 yr old can start learning the game!

                Again, many sincere thanks!

                      Mindz!

                      Yes, 8.

She likes quake. we played a good bit, online at the end of last summer. I am always at runequake (shmack) and the fellas over there would take it very easy on her. She is getting pretty good.

I have been searcing for those old pix I posted when she was born regarding the pediatric nurse playing quake, etc. (photoshop)

Back to quake last winter after a long hiatus!

                      Cheers!
