I'm trying to install high poly models, hd textures for monsters and stages with smc4.7.2 and dark places 2013 03 04

it's breaking when I just drag and drop the files into ID1 like I was told to do in the few places I have read so far.

The textures or polygons are making models invisable, several of the guns and monsters you can't see.

SMC doesn't seem to load fully either.

    Win 8 x64 nVIDIA ddr5 current driver.

perhaps you can post a screenshot of what your ID1 folder looks like?
so that we can better help you, cuz we'll know what you got there

just upload pic to imgur or such, and link the pic
    .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
    > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

ah yes... some of the pk3s assume you already have the original pk3s with the models in your ID1 folder, some of the multi-skin pk3s dont include them either as requested by author or if unnecesary.

check the bottom of first post of multiskin thread to find links to where you can acquire the pk3s with the models for the ones that dont show up
        .

            Hello Nickelbawker,

... and why dont you read the included readme.txt then ?

The smc has instructions especially for beginners.
It contains a file called 'starter kit' which does what you want to do.

It is important not to overdo things at the beginning. If you are not sure how to handle replacement files, you should keep it simple.
The 'starter kit' already includes most of the files you are trying to manually "install".

Do not eat more as you can swallow
Use the 'starter kit' together with the attached autoexec.cfg and the rest will be done automagically, as the autoexec has already all settings made for you that you need.

If you are not happy with it, you can then start to replace or extend it one by one...

            Important:
You do NOT use the smc at the moment !
Your screenshot from your id1 folder shows that you have a "progs.dat" in it.
That is overriding the smc completely.
The size of that "progs.dat" tells me that it is the original Quake V1.06 "progs.dat".

Delete that "progs.dat" and all those zzzzz...zzz .pk3īs and start fresh.
As mentioned above: One step after the other. Not everything at once.

            Best of luck,
            Seven

PS: Also the sizes of your .pak files are completely wrong. 6 MB and 118 MB ??
Where did you get your Quake from ?
