  • install on windows 8 w/ dosbox

Trying install quake on windows 8, using dosbox. I've mounted drive c and now I'm stuck where they say to mount CD/DVD (in this example drive i, type in mount d i:\ -t cdrom (this example is for tomb raider). My CD drive is "d", so I sub "d" for "i", and I get "directory d:\-t doesn't exist". I'm DOS ignorant(obvious by the help I need), I'm hoping someone could walk me through.
    thank you

If you're just trying to get the pak files, you can manually get them off of the CD; see this thread: issues with installion from CD :: Quake General Discussions

thank you for replying, I found another thread that helped me get it loaded while I was waiting for help. Now I have different issue. I set all my options to the recommended by Dos box. Main screen and demo looked great but as soon as I choose single player, the graphics spun and were distorted. I have a Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M.

You should use the Dosbox only for installation. After that please use an replacemant Engine (Qrack, Darkplaces...) without the Dosbox.

Yes, I installed Dark places, in the folder with only ID1 from the CDROM for Quake. I click on dark places and load up quake, everything looks great until I try to go into single player.

In my ID1 folder, I have CONFIG.CFG, PAK0.PAK, and PAK1.PAK, is this correct?

              Hello msnyder63,

Basically all you need are your 2 .pak files (which you seem to successfully ripped from your CD).
Now create a folder called: Quake somewhere on your harddisc.
Create a subfolder called: id1 inside your Quake folder.
Stuff the 2 .pak files into your id1 folder.

Download an advanced Quake engine (be aware that some have special OS versions).
Some only have 1 single .exe file (like FTE or DirectQ).
Some have a LOT of files (like Darkplaces or Qrack).

Extract your engine of choice directly into your Quake folder.
Double click the .exe file of your engine of choice in your Quake folder.
              The rest is pure magic

              Have fun,
              Seven

thanks, I placed the extracted Dark Places files in my Quake folder, with the ID1 folder(containing the two PAK files, and a config file). Should I have put the extracted Dark places files in the ID1 folder instead?
I did the same thing with Winquake, similar result, spinning as soon as I start a new game. I must be missing a step, or just not comprehending something.

Is there anything else in the Quake folder? Hopefully not. (Especially not any "opengl32.dll" file.)

The two pak files, and CONFIG.CFG.
