  • Texture Problem in Shrak for Quake

    Hi there,
    at first english is not my native Language so im sorry if i write something wrong

    I am just playing through my old Games. After i finished Quake and the two Addons "Scourge of Armagon" and "Dissolution of Eternity" i wanted to start Shrak for Quake (using Dos-Box for all Titels)

    The normal Installation didnt work because in the Installation Progress Dosbox told "Illegal command: xcopy"

    With the Workaround postet in the Comments of this Video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPHDMkWfCiI) i finally managed to install the game.
    But when i start all textures are White except for my weapon. Any Idea what i could do?

    Hi! Drak,
    Would you be interested in playing Quake in a more modern engine like Darkplaces or FTE?
    There are also other engines geared towards keeping the original look if you would prefer (like Engoo).
    You are in for a treat if you have only ever played software Quake through DosBox.

    What's your native language? We may have a member who can help translate if it gets complicated.

      Hi,
      yes i prefer playing the old games in the original version including the old textures.
      My native language is german, but i think i understand most of it.
      And to proof that this sentence is not right.....what means i am in for a treat ?

        Du hast Glueck, aber ich weiss nicht, ob mein Deutsch so gut ist wie dein Englisch!

        Quake mit modernem Computer mit all Effekte ist wirklich super, aber wie du gesagt hast, du moechtest die Original spielen.

        Du kannst Darkplaces mit Effekte ausgeschaltet spielen, und es sieht aus ziemlich aehnlich wie originale Quake (keine extra Assets) aber es passt besser mit neuen Betriebssysteme.

        You are in for a treat if you haven't tried Quake using a modern engine with all the effects turned on but as you have stated, you want to stay original.

        You can run Darkplaces with the effects turned off and it will look pretty close to the original (no extra assets added) but with the positive effect of better compatability with newer operating systems.

          as adam stated, darkplaces can look just like original quake, including unfiltered textures.

          this picture i made a few days ago was made in darkplaces


          if you put 'gl_texturemode gl_nearest_mipmap_nearest' the textures will get no filtering and look just like in stock quake

          .

          and here you can get a lil addon i made for darkplaces that turns particles back to the squares from software-quake instead of the rounded GL-quake particles

            Ok,
            i downloaded Darkplaces and unpacked it. Then i copied the ID1 Folder from my Quake Installation into the new Folder. Quake runs properly but how can i get Shrak started with this mod?

            P.S. your german is pretty good.

              To be honest, I haven't played Shrak.
              But usually you just copy your game/mod folder (Maybe SHRAK folder)
              into Darkplaces like you did with the ID1 folder.

              Then make a shortcut:

              Darkplaces.exe -game SHRAK +map start

              That is a guess tho' I'm sure someone will be along shortly to correct me.

                Sniff, i tried and failed.
                I copied the Shrak Folder into the Darkplacesmod and simply renamed in Id1. And it started. But also with bad textures (slightly better)
                Here are some Screens. 1-2 from my Dosbox Attempt and 3-4 with the Darplacesmod. The 4th will come with the next post

                      Ohoh, my Noobfactor seems to increase as i get older

                      But thanks for all the help so far. But it seems that i need more.

                      Here are two Links to the Data form my Shrak CD-Rom and one for the Texturefix postet above.
                      Maybe someone get this to work and can tell how he did that.

                        Got it working.

                        There used to be a Link to Shrak.zip here.

                        Unzip the above so that the SHRAK folder & SHRAK shortcut.bat end up in the Darkplaces folder.
                        Don't rename them and don't stick them inside ID1.
                        They should be in the same folder as the Darkplaces.exe (& the ID1 folder which is required for textures by the look of it).

                        The folder would of been a lot smaller but I encountered a problem with uppercase & lowercase named bsp files co-existing in the pak file which meant I would have had to rename (recase?) all the files before getting them into the pak, So I just placed them into a separate SHRAK\maps folder. Effectively doubling them up.

                        Anyway, I tested it and it worked on my end.

                        Was this mod ever sold? If so, we may have unintentionally violated some copyrights here.

                          Getting the old Games to work on modern Systems is always an adventure.

                          I test your Settings later. And give than Feedback.

                          Yes. The Game was sold (TheLegacy: Game :: Shrak for Quake) but I own the Original. So i think its ok to modifie it a bit to get it to work.
