  • SMC v5.11 causing unplayable FPS

    Hey everyone.

Little while ago I decided to return to my old favorite FPS. Usually try to do so every year or so. I also usually try to install the latest and greatest eye candy that people have modded into the game. I use Darkplaces, btw. Anyway, I've been building a small collection of pk3s/mods over the years that tickle my fancy. These include the standard QRP textures, pretty water, fancy teleports, and a few monster models.

I decided to try adding the SMC v5.11. And while I dig most of the features it adds (seriously, some of this stuff is insanely cool for a game from 1996), unfortunately it's dragging my FPS down into the 10-15 fps range.

I did a bit of troubleshooting and I can confirm that is the SMC that's cause of the drop. Prior to adding it to Darkplaces, I would get around 60-90 FPS consistently. I tried disabling anything that I thought could be the culprit via the config files, but no dice (which, btw, was almost everything).

tl;dr (SMC is causing unplayable FPS):
I've done a bit of searching around the forums to help narrow things down. However one thing I'd like to do that would most definitely solve the issue of finding the culprit, is to dismantle the SMC, and add only the features I want.

For me, this is the gyro, kickable gibs, nails stuck in walls, particle effects for flames and explosions, and a few others.

So is there a way to manually add the features/files I want? Or is that going to be a huge pain in the ass?

Thanks for any advice anyone can give. Also thank you to the people of this community for making such rad mods. I'll keep chipping away at this in the meantime.

IIRC there are instructions on how to disable/enable specific aspects of SMC inside the documentation that came with it...

As I've found, this actually might not have anything to do with the SMC. As a rule of thumb for me, if you download any PK3's, CHECK THEM FOR USELESS JUNK!!! If they have useless files that exist in other places as something else, import the content selectively.

If you still think the SMC is the culprit...

Another problem might be your particular config.cfg used in conjugation with the SMC. The two WORST laggy cvars are r_water 1 (most people have this enabled) and cl_decals_models 1. If you want a faster game, you may want to disable these. You may also want to think about setting r_glsl_offsetmapping to 0 or turning your bloom effect off (this is also an extreme cause of lag).

The above suggestions are HUGE fps boosters that do not require you to make the ultimate sacrifice of disabling the RT world.

Finally, this may come off a surprise, but the teamonster ogre is a massive cause of lag for some SMC users if you have it installed.

Try this out and tell me if it helped.

and Pretty Water is known to be demanding.

Darkplaces has a menu called RealTime or something like that, you can adjust many settings in their and gain a lot of FPS / or lose a lot, depending on what setting is on or off, or how much the slider is being moved. Most sliders are the further left, the quicker it ism the further right, the more demanding it is.

that is in my experience anyway....

Mind, there's an entire config.cfg to run through, where you can disable 99% of everything. I already tried disabling almost every single thing in there.
Though, to be thorough, maybe I should, so I can rule it out that it's not from the config file.

Pringles: I'm 99% certain it's the SMC. If I have everything loaded into DP properly, and run it, I'll get >60FPS. The moment I add the SMC pk3 (vanilla config or my own), the FPS plummets. Upon deleting the pk3, the FPS returns to normal, and all the SMC mods are gone.

But I'll fiddle with what you suggested. Thanks!

Okay so this is incredibly embarassing, but a good lesson for everyone. :p

Because I have so many mods and builds of Darkplaces lying about, most of which are old as hell, I was accidentally using a 2011 build of DP. Not helping lol.

I started from scratch, made SURE I was using the latest DP build, and it runs much more smoothly now.
