  • Half Life in Quake PowerPC?

So I am trying to get Half Life working on PowerPC, I already have everything converted to Quake and yes, I am aware it won't be exactly the same.

On Windows I used Darkplaces which this is what the folder looks like:
    Darkplaces Engine
HL(half life folder with the progs,gfx_wad,etc)

    and it plays fine.

Now for Mac OS X, I don't think Darkplaces runs on Mac, only Linux and Windows.

What engine could I use to play it?

    Thanks in advance!

powerpc is rare enough now that you often need to compile your own build, and certainly can't expect the engine to be tested on that arch...

you'd find it easier to start with an engine that actually supports halflife's gamecode properly (yes, there are third-party engines derived from quake that can actually run it acceptibly, although you'll still probably be in breach of copyright).
you'll probably still need to fix it up to cope with endian differences though.

And Steam was never released on the PPC platformer, Steam was going to release Half Life but they quickly cut it(due to the lack of demand).

Tho, it could be possible there is still PPC code in the Steam version. It wouldn't surprise me that it runs through something like XCider(A PPC emulator for Mac OS X Intel.)

I found two engines but I couldn't get them to work. FuhQuake & QuakeSpasm(I have had better luck with 'spasm tho), When I load 'spasm, I am hit with a GFX_wad error. Which means I need the pak files(after I dragged the ID1 folder, it ran fine). When I try to run any maps from console it gives me a "Couldn't spawn server maps/c1a0.bsp"

http://triptohell.info/moodles/macos...fteqw.sv_ppc32 from 2013... gah. I guess it's still a more recent date than this topic http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-hel...urce-open.html (the mod described within will likely be needed to support halflife's various func_ stuff).

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but how do I install the mod?

                  Hey,
                  Just out of interest,
why are you trying to get HL to run on a PPC mac?

Just for the hell of it?

I love my old PPC minimac but getting anything to run, including the internet, is a slog.
I just installed a cut down version of Ubuntu onto it in the hopes that it might run faster
but I am stuck as the OS (and I) don't know what wifi adapter it has...

HL on PPC looks like its possible which is hard to say for most games on other platforms. Big fan of HL as well.

minimac? I assume you mean Mac Mini? Mac Mini's are great and the lowest version is a G4 1.0ghz. I am typing from a 1.25ghz PowerBook G4.

Throw Tiger(10.4) on there and it will run nicely. Plus you get Classic mode for older games that only work on OS 9. Ubuntu is a horrible choice by the way. Also make sure you have the max 2gb of ram, 512mb/1gb is sluggish.
