  • Let's get something going

I'm looking for a side project to invest some of my work into. I tried offering to help kenthemodder in his thread. It's been a week and he hasn't even replied. I tried working for reps and maybe that will do something eventually but, I'm super impatient. I decided maybe it would be best to just put it flat out "Give me something to do!"

If you don't have something to do but wish you did, let's invent something to do together. Remaking an entire game never ever gets finished so I am thinking it could be something that is more "upgrade" oriented or something that could be used as a tool.

I really don't care what it is as long as I don't have to draw.

I program in almost 20 languages & have strong blender and map editor knowledge/skills. I fully get how all this stuff works and I think I'm pretty good at getting solutions one way or another for the handful of things that I don't know/understand. I'm a force and I'm trying to help you with... whatever.

Let me throw out an example:

When I got banned from here Anubis (my cousin) was pushing me to make my own site. I modded the snot out of a wordpress template and created this. It's semi abandoned and there isn't much there but I spun that site on the fly with no clue (beyond knowing all the base languages) of how to modify wordpress, use bootstrap and a few other smallies. What I'm trying to say is: It doesn't even matter if we know what we are doing. It can all be figured out. That site is mobile friendly from the top and I made everything you see.

Maybe you can play some multi-player quake with us to really get a feel of how the game is in motion with many players in-game Shmack is pretty populated during the day and there are some games even going on at night.

    and check this thread

Maybe you can be a programmer for this there arent many new groundbreaking and original fps'es around and we all like 'em so let's get something going now

True that. You know whats truthfully looking like is going to become to next hot thing? MOBA+FPS , there are two new games that I know of looking to release soon, Overwatch(Blizzard) & Battleborn (Gearbox Studios/2K) are two big ones, and there are 5 others now that I have searched , Gigantic, Supernova , Dark Nexus Arena , and Arena of Fate.

If the amount of games getting ready to be released, based on a hybridization of two genres of games that was never really meshed together prior to this explosion of them happening right now, then the weather is calling for MOBA+FPS precipitation..... At this point one or two of those games may miss the mark and not get real popular, but I'm betting all 6+ or whatever become all the craze, like ice cream except in different flavors.

Maybe someone should create a poll/thread that asked for the community to highlight 3 things they think makes Quake1 stand out, or maybe what does many newer games have that Quake1 never was given?

One thing that comes to mind to me,that seems an extremely interesting avenue.... is Darkplaces + its custom server/netcode/whatever it is that somehow enables its capacity to have 64 players on one server, all at the same time !!!!

What could 32 players do, against another set of 32 players? What could 64 players do all at once, besides create insane levels of entropy and chaos.

64 players to me says Battlefield3&4, that is the only game that I own that usues that many players at once.

This is 100% shooting from the hip.... literally randomly generated idea, instant imagination just add water...

a Darkplaces mod that uses 64 players, except one player is gigantic and a juggernaut with insane destructive attacks that are brutal, slower movement but, there are some places around the gigantor fucks attack zones that don't (think King Kong size, and 63 players are super tiny (they would be your normal size player), be extremely quick/nimble, and,,,,,uh,,,,,,, They would be like lizards on a brick wall, you can see them, but catching (hitting/killing) has to be well thought out ahead of time because of how long the monstrosity takes to initiate and complete an attack? maybe when you hit 63 players at once they go flying all over the place using that realtime Physics engine that someone developed for Quake1 (somewhere,@ sometime, made the ability to shoot boxes and make them just fly all over the place I recall) HMM?

      What say you!?

Everyone wants to be the Giant would be the objective I guess.

      Cerebral Overload.

What are some other ideas? Or, ways to question community members and expose that "Diamond in the Rough" that a lot of if not the majority of Q1 lovers would want to put their skillsets to work collectively together?

      /end rant, gg

But no, why move in the direction of what others are doing, instead of doing something more simpler and fresh? It can even be less work, and easier to be organized.

I think it's not 'what is the new craze' but rather what 'creates a new craze'

Quake itself was based on the same premise. I mean it was a brand new design, with some added features - which of course now are laughable - such as looking up and down and levels with multiple floors, something the doom engine could not do at that time.

If I had your range of knowledge and skills, I would probably do this game right now but I don't think I could ever catch up - I'm more of a director type person - I really see a grand design that could be made

So I say, if all the games that you talk about go in a direction of complexity, why not do something opposite, in the direction of simplicity yet develop complex attributes to it, ex. game play, features, etc

I heard a long time ago that quake was planned to be an rpg type game, why not something fun like that but with some developing skillsets along the single player side of it - which would add fun and value of actually progressing through the game

Then for the multiplayer side of it, a completely fresh new experience

I really like quake's formula, and i think it can really be improved upon in ways it has not been thought of.

Formulas are not bad, but sometimes execution fails and it's what grabs the public attention at the end that makes or breaks a game

@I thought MG typed that response - hmmm, my avatar at a glance is too similar. I'll change it soon.

@range of knowledge and skills - I quit drinking a decade or so ago. I needed a hobby... it just kept going. And keeps going. If I live to be 80 I might know as many languages by then. Playing with models and maps is something I would be better at teaching than taking myself too seriously with. I can manipulate images but I'm not very good at it. My only other big thing is music. I started playing 25 years ago and I took the time to learn theory and a few synth/editing/authoring programs. The rest is just a bunch of factoids, like: -game rogue. Primarily, I'm a computer languages junkie.

@chris - I like your "Giant" Quake idea. The physics engine is just ode.dll, unless you are referring to something I have forgotten/missed. I also believe I read somewhere that the darkplaces server can do more than 64 players. 64 is just default max. I may be confusing that with some other piece of information, though.

I have often wished for the promise of destructive maps as promised by BF3 and 4 though never realized in actual practice.Long ago a game designer was working on and released this game called TRAX that actually implemented this function. It was a battle tank sim that was quite a lot of fun but the guy died and it was abandoned.Being able to blow holes in the terrain made for some very interesting game play and strategy, not to mention the replay value was off the chart. Some form of CTF combined with destuctive maps would be very interesting if bases would have to be abanded, moved ect...take away the hook and you would remove the largest barrier to the mod by leveling the field and make teams have to plan attacks and defenses to mobile situations would get pretty intense.Almost a cross of Qball and CTF .Just my 2 cents.
                WARNING
May be too intense for some viewers.

I forget who... but someone wanted to implement destructive maps years ago with me. Since Quake doesn't do much with the map after it's loaded, it's a bit hard to implement. The idea I had was to edit an original map file so that pillars and such were put into func_wall sort of entities that could take damage and be removed. This would make it seem like you can destroy the world. However, it's way too inefficient for an entire map, though it could theoretically work.

To achieve destrucive walls like another game, the entire way Quake handles map files and keeps track of walls would have to be overhauled, which is more work than I'd wish on someone here. BUT it would be sweet as hell.

I'm sorry. Merry belated Christmas, Zop. That's the ladt time I rely on my memory for a list like that.
