  • DarkPlaces with Steam version

I can't get DarkPlaces to work with the Steam version.

When i run DarkPlaces.exe i get error "you have reached this menu due to missing or unlocated -basedir/path/to/game"

My game path is the Steam default install location:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Quake\

    I have a ld1 folder
I've extracted the DarkPlaces compressed file inot the ld1 folder.
    There is a PAK.0 and PAK.1
    Quake works normally.
But DarkPlaces always gives me that error.

I've tried creating a shortcut to DarkPlaces.exe on my desktop and amended the Target to:

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Quake\Id1\darkplaces. exe" -basedir C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Quake

    But it's the same.
I've also tried elminated the -basedir from that path but it makes no difference.

    What else should i try?

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Quake\Id1\darkplaces.exe" <---- NO! pak0.pak and pak1.pak should be in id1, but executable does not go in there.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Quake\darkplaces.exe" <--- YES. Executable goes in Quake folder.

I think you can take it from there.

Provided that your shortcut has "start in" directory set to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Quake", you can lose the -basedir <path_to_id1> as it isn't necessary because it will look there.

Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

Does it actually require using NetQuake or Quakeworld to do local LAN coop?

*All* quake engines are one or the other of those. Or both.

iiuc, all NQ engines (ie, other than ezquake) can be configured to fall back to vanilla protocols, but how they're configured may be obtuse, and they may still be buggy even then. This also isn't useful if the mod you're trying to run just requires protocol extensions in the first place.
So if you're mixing engines and it doesn't work in some way, then insist on everyone using the same engine version instad, because that's easier than figuring out how to reconfigure the server to just work...
