This map is available also in q1, I believe it is called q1edge or something. If you get into a game of ca - clan arena, it is a voteable map, so you can vote it and play with others on the server. The server which I played this map on is rage.quakeone.com Have fun
The gemstone of gaming is Quake, so load it up and play some

Depending on who you talk to, it's either the greatest Quake2 map ever, or it's the most despised Quake2 map ever. I've been a regular over at the Tastyspleen.net Q2 servers since probably 2008. In the past 3 or 4 years, server traffic has drastically dropped. But there are still a die-hard few of us left that refuse to play anything else. There's a small but very dedicated 1v1 group within the community, and they typically HUGELY outclass the ordinary free-for-all deathmatch players in skill. Those are the people who seemingly play Q2DM1 (The Edge) over and over and over and over and over again. They have a few favorites for dueling on, but Q2DM1 remains the #1 pick for most of them. As for myself, I'm not into 1v1 at all. I get the idea of it, I know the basics, but I don't care for it. It's too "formal" for me. I prefer the laid back mindlessness of free-for-all. I don't have to try too hard, I don't have to focus on item and weapon control, I just run around and shoot and have fun. And whenever I get tired of it, I just disconnect and no one calls me a sissy or a ragequitter for leaving before a map ends.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of Q2DM1. I can play it without hating it, but I prefer not to if theres any other option. Unfortunately, the "DM" server over at Tastyspleen is about the only FFA server with people on it anymore, and the only maps available are Q2DM1 through Q2DM8. The other main FFA server is the "Vanilla" server which has the 8 stock DM maps as well as all the single player maps, and even a select few custom maps. That's my favorite server, but unfortunately it doesn't have the constant traffic anymore that it used to. Maybe sometime mid-day you can find 3 to 6 people there, but in the evenings it tends to be vacant... whereas the DM server tends to have at the very least 3 people on there virtually 24hrs a day 7days a week.

After looking at that video, I feel like I need to say it. Apologies if I offend anyone.

God, how ugly does Quake II look like. Red, gray, plain, almost monochromatic... (and I suspect Quake I would look great even in mono Also, is it just me or the alias models look like they stretched 2 sq. inches of skin all over the model?

Yeah, that's the fun thing about Q2. The original game uses it's own color palette file with a finite number of colors. Whenever you would want to mod any of the images like HUD numbers or even model textures, you'd have to convert it to the Q2 color palette. If that color isn't on the Q2 palette when you convert it, it automatically changes it to the closest color. But with updated clients now, you can utilize PNG and JPG images that DO NOT use the color palette.

However, there is some kind of lightmap in the game which can change the color that any surface appears as in-game as well. On most maps, that lightmap gives everything a orange-ish tint. You can disable the lightmap though with a simple setting in your autoexec.cfg or config.cfg and then everything will look normal.
