  • Hour Long Single-Player Doom Stream

I know there is a lot of back and forth between everyone about whether this game is going to be good or not, but Gamespot did an hour long stream today featuring some single-player gameplay, so maybe that will help you decide.

While I didn't have the chance to play the multiplayer game, I have to say that the single player in this looks like a lot of fun! I've divorced myself from the idea that it's supposed to be the old games so that's helping. With the double jump and suit upgrades, I have to say that there is definitely some Metroid Prime inspiration going on here.

I don't think you need to divorce yourself from the old games to be interested in this. All you need is to not expect a 1:1 recreation of every mechanic and asset from doom i think.

I mean hell, hellknights even take 2-3 ssg blasts like the old games, keycards are not only used but also can unlock secret doors (and it has secrets) levels look surprisingly nonlinear, AI seems really dynamic and it looks way more like an evolution of classic doom than doom 3 did with all the emphasis on avoiding damage through moving.

I'm pretty hyped now that they showed SP gameplay, it looks like a really nice blend of cdoom and d3, or like you said metroid prime. Plus the glory kill highlight can be disabled and they are surprisingly quick too.

I see a lot of disappointed people commenting out there about how it's not enough like the old games, so I think it helps to divorce this game from the old games and think of this as a new series. I don't mean that in a negative way whatsoever because I think this looks fun, but I do think it's unrealistic to think that a game released in 2016 by a huge company like Zenimax is going to release a 90's style shooter.

I'm with you, this stream put the single player over for me too! I love how the secrets are set up as well. The double jumping adds a whole new dimension to the doom series.

I probably won't do it but I do like the idea of disabling the hud and stuff as well, it'll make for interesting speed runs and play-throughs on youtube.

For me personally the only interesting levels are the hell levels. The others all look the same to me. There is too little differentiation in those base maps. Everywhere the same metal textures, bridges and drums. One level have them on the right, the other on the left

That was the reason why I could not play Doom3 for too long, as the hell levels were only at the end...

Hearing that there are about 1/3 hell levels in Doom 2016 sound good to me and that you will teleport back and forth between hell and base is another plus on my list.

Another negative point in my opinion is the modifications feature:
It is a part of Role playing game where you spent your experience in different classes/weapons. I am not sure if that does fit into Doom 2016.
In the video clip the player cheated and spent lots of points into lots of different weapons, armor, hell abilities, etc.
That looks really confusing. He spent a long time clicking back and forth through the modification menues...
But lets see how that really will be implemented into the game once its finished. Anyhow, that gives a nice possibility to cheat and set all to max.

I am looking forward to Doom 2016 nevertheless.

They did say the upgrades were completely optional. I think it's a good thing as it gives more goodies to use for secrets than your standard health/ammo/powerups/easter eggs, plus i think it carries over in a new game so it could add replayability
