  • Quake Champions Announced!

It was just announced at the Bethesda E3 Press Conference that there is a new Quake game in development called Quake Champions.

Judging from the trailer, the game looks to take after Quake 3: Arena, as opposed to following the first Quake, as the trailer features a good front and center shot of Visor from Quake 3. Even if this may be the case, everyones favorite Quake Ranger was also featured in the trailer.

Bethesda said that they will have more to talk about at QuakeCon this year, but until then you can have solace in the knowledge that unlocked framerates are confirmed!

    Sigh.

    Another Q3 Arena.

Guess those of us that hoped to have some kind of interesting story in the game can just go ... um... back there in the lobby, sit, and wait for something that will never happen.

    Think I'll pass.

Ya, no I'm good on arena shooters. PASS!

I'm waiting for a single player game following along the lines of actual Quake, not the tangents that followed it.

        Such a disappointment.

I was wanting Doom combat, but with Lovecraftian critters and Dark Souls III style gothic temples.

What we got was a Battleborn clone.

          This cracks me up.

The Quake 1 community is kicking big time, with absolutely no trace of slowing down.

It was, and is, by far the most successful Quake ever made, because 20 years later people are STILL fuckin crazy about it.

          There's no way Bethesda/id didn't notice this.

There is so much raw material from the Q1 universe they could have come up with. And the multiplayer could still be Quake multiplayer.

In all honesty, what true Quake fans want is a bitchin remake of Q1, just like they did with Doom.

This is just fucking swell, I thought the day would never come where we'd see another Quake, and now I wish it hadn't.

          Q1 for life.

              This isn't Quake at all.

              Just another Arena.
I am like a stray dog, lost in between what I do and what I should do.

Its tough to draw a conclusion on a video game from the trailer. Triple A studios spend TONS of money on advertising. What some people fail to realise is that a game trailer does NOT equal the game. Games a getting more advanced by the day, graphics included, but that entire Quake trailer was pre-rendered.

For those that don't know, when you play a game, like quake (1996) it is rendered in real time by your CPU and graphics card. The trailer for Quake (20??) was animated and rendered by a CPU and video card, but it wasn't in real time. This allows the game studio to make the game look MUCH better than it can when being played in real time.

What we have seen from this trailer is a sliver of what we will be able to do in this game, and we haven't yet seen what the game will actually look like. Regardless of if we think the game will be good or bad, we need to hold off on judging it too hard for now. On the other hand, we should be cautious even when a gameplay trailer does come out, and not be enticed by pre-order bonuses and such. There's a huge rant here, but I'll spare you all the trouble and go for the compact version.

I love Quake (DUH) and not just the first game. Quake II is really good, and the only reason I don't play it more is because Quake exists. It makes Quake II look bad. That being said, Quake II isn't Quake. ID software didn't continue the story (what little of that there was) of Quake, they changed the level style, the combat, and the music. They called it Quake II because people knew Quake. Same with Quake III. A game the would be worthy of bearing the Quake title today would have to be relevant to the original, and judging by the trailer (and being a massively hypocritical) Quake Champions isn't that. So hold off if you're thinking of buying Quake Champions and wait until it comes out, regardless of the enticing offers there will be for pre-ordering. /end-rant

In conclusion, Quake Champions may be a very good game, but I doubt it will be unique. There are plenty of other shooters out there with massive multi million dollar budgets. It would have to be VERY special to stand out in the shooter genre. In fact, it would have to be a remake of the original if its going to have that name.

                Happy Fragging

Thanks Pie Face, you summed everything up beautifully.

I've watched many E3's and game trailers and the thing that I've learned is that you can't tell anything from a CG trailer. It's possible that this could still have a single player component within, ID just likes to focus on the multiplayer for Quake and Doom.

You look at the recent Doom release, the beta right before it was only multiplayer. I happened to find out what the single player component was because they did a one off live stream, and it ended up being the best part of the game!

I wouldn't give up hope just yet, they restarted development on the recent Doom several times, so that may well happen with Quake if fans aren't feeling what's going on.

Ignore anything I said about a campaign, I guess Saber Interactive, who specializes in multiplayer, is developing it with ID.

Who knows, it could still be a fun game, but yea, it would've been great to see an updated Quake 1...

There are some huge red flags for me in the trailer, and the fact that a new Quake game is even being made.
                      1. Doom got released with shitty multiplayer
                      2. The trailer shows slow gameplay
                      3. A magic system may be implemented
                      4. There seems to be a "dash"
                      5. Lack of shown gameplay

                      It's not going to work.

The thing that's got me isn't so much the abilities or the trailer because it's CG, but it's the company that will be working on it with ID, Saber Interactive. They're the ones who worked on the broken-at-release Halo: Master Chief Collection, and RIPD and God Mode games that were kind of bad.

I really wanted to be positive about this announcement and I will save judgement for QuakeCon, but this does not look promising.

The 90s were the golden years of gaming. I'm glad I was just old enough to enjoy the final years of it. I desperately want to see quake revitalized in all its old school glory, with a hopping modding and multiplayer scene like the old days. But I just don't think this is possible when all the emphasis is on graphics and drawing in a younger, less competitive and less skilled crowd of players.

Q1 kicked your teeth in if you weren't good enough. Kids today don't have the patience for this. Call of Duty sluts.

Developed by iD Software, Quake Champions will feature "a diverse cast of warriors each with different attributes and unique abilities, allowing you to fight the way you want," according to iD studio director Tim Willits. Like other contemporary shooters (Overwatch for one), Quake Champions is being pitched as an e-sports game, with promises of tournament support from the publisher. That's a tough sell given the competition, but at the very least pro players won't have to worry about speed: Bethesda is targeting 120FPS rendering for the game.
