  • winquake woe(s)

hello everyone, first post / thread here

tired of emulating dos to play quake so i gave winquake a try
it works like a charm and i'm having a blast but..yeah,the music

i did use google and found many many threads about that issue but they mostly focus on newer ports / enginess and i want to use winquake

finally i found one about winquake and that's what i have to do,according to it :
create a "music" subfolder in "id1" and put the ogg audio files in there
i also need to rename the winmm.dll file to _winmm.dll
i didn't even have that file so i went and added it but well..it doesn't work

i also tried mounting a cd image (mdf - mds) with daemon tools but nothing

any further help / suggestions ? i'm on xp for what it's worth

    thanks

    Hello profmerluzzi,

You already stated that you do not want to try any other/modern Software-Quake-Engine, so lets find out how to make winquake play music files.

Make sure you have id1īs newest winquake version.

As far as I know winquake only supports music from CD Audio files.
It doesnt matter if it is on a REAL CD in your computer cd drive, or if it is a VIRTUALLY mounted CD.

The only important thing is, that the CD drive letter with the CD Audio files must be the FIRST letter after your harddiscs !!

So for example, you have harddiscs with letters: C, D and E.
And you have CD drives with letters: F and G

The CD Audio MUST be in your F drive.

I just tested winquake with these conditions and music played fine:
1.) Put my original Quake CD into drive F:
2.) Mounted an image of my original Quake CD in virtual drive F:

for option 2.) you need to reassign your REAL CD drive to letter H: and set your virtual drive to letter F:

Have fun playing Quake as it was meant to be with music,
    Seven

Why on earth would you want to screw around with ole WinQuake?!

If you weren't on Windows XP, I'd suggest you try my port, UQE Quake.
Its by far better than using WinQuake and I specifically focussed on (like all my UQE ports) to ensure you can get your old-school fix.

You can boot-up UQE Quake to render the game exactly like how WinQuake and DOS Quake would render the game. UQE is a much more purist port and I'm sure when you've tried it, you won't care to run WinQuake.

Its not a very well-known port though, so don't view all ports through those blinkers you got on.

It supports CD Audio playback as well as OGG / MP3 and WAV.
If you got the CD, just pop it in and enjoy, or rip it to your HDD and have fun.

..if only you were running a newer Windows.. xD

Anyway, I just thought to give you my 2c. Maybe its not helpful to you now, but maybe in the future.
