Trying to keep up with Photometry is not easy when your always on the road but I am still making an effort.Just keeping up with all the changes in Blender is annoying but worth all the effort. Here is a small piece of art I liked and purchased just to focus on this area.

I'm still running blender 2.69, kinda outdated now i guess but does everything i need it to do. That turtle should be a nice challenge, lots of sculpting to be had there. keep us updated!

Surprisingly 123d catch works quite well in it's very first attempt.

I chose a very complicated design to test the bounds and came away shocked it has improved so much in the few years its been out. Some of you may remember the Maps I did from photos a few years ago,I tried some commercial stuff but all failed miserably.I basically did it all manually to get what I thought was at least a descent resulting mesh but I dont think I am going back to that exhaustive workflow again!

        Wow!

So I read up on photometry...I didn't know blender could do that. Freaking sweet!

        Nice job man

123d Catch is an AutoDesk product.Still in Beta so free...for now.
It has an exporter for Obj and fbx so flow very well into blender making it great for sculpting very fast.

what about the other sides though? How much work will it be to merge all the sides into one mesh? Maybe you could make a "panorama" (basically a uv map) of all sides of the model and figure out how to wrap the 123d results back around to itself.

e: I noticed you have half a millionish tris....Would you agree that you are trading modeling time for optimizing time?

Other than cut the bottom off the resulting capture I have done zip to this.
It is the raw import to blender on my laptop and is indeed a full 3 dimentional mesh. All of maybe 5 min work so yes I am certainly trading for time ! here is another angle

One other thing I should mention about my motivation on this is my target application of this method is not to obtain a low poly blank to refine for game use.My curiosity is fast acquisition of parts for my 3d printing obsession I have going on.Though both assets are not in conflict. It is just so wierd how my Carpentry,Quaking and electronics worlds have collided leaving me with a foot in each.

I know what ya mean. You would not believe the number of times I've fallen back on my qc coding, mapping, and modelling knowledge for the various jobs (and job opportunities) i've had.

i don't have any 3d printer experience but i've been around them...they're wicked cool.

btw...you might wanna get that third foot removed lol

Whoa. I suppose the trouble is you need a good source similar to how DooM did half the work on it's sprites but still that's cool blender can do that now.
