  • Help with Quake Episodes

    Hello,

I am new to this method of playing Quake and I had a question. I am using the Quake X 1.2.1 version with the Shareware. I noticed that with this setup one can only play the first episode of Quake. I remember playing the other episodes maybe 12 years ago but have since then forgotten them. When I try to play them it tells me I need to register with or call ID Software, which I can imagine is no longer supported by them. Is there any other way to play all episodes of Quake? If I bought one of the original Quake CDs for Mac, for example, would I be able to use it on macOS Sierra? I'm not sure how this works. Thank you!

    Buy Quake?

    Steam: QUAKE on Steam

    Gog: https://www.gog.com/game/quake_the_offering
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

      Hi Baker,

Yes, purchasing it is fine, but it seemed as if Quake on Steam was only for Windows, otherwise I would have purchased it to begin with. Is there a way of knowing if it works on macOS Sierra? Thank you for your help.

If the source port you're using runs on Mac (and many of them do), then yes, you can play the additional episodes on Mac.

Thank you enderandrew, so, the source port would be the Quake X 1.2.1 that I'm using?

After purchasing it from Steam would I be taking some kind of file or information from it and directing it to the Quake X 1.2.1 like with the shareware when it asks you for the ID1 folder? Any help would be appreciated, thanks alot. (I'm actually kind of new to macs as well.)

All you need is pak1.pak from the registered Quake download (Steam or Gog) and then you put that in the same folder as your existing pak0.pak and you have the registered version.

Since Gog doesn't require Steam (and the Steam user interface and all of that), Gog is the easier option since on Gog it is a simple .zip download. I'm just saying ...
Thanks Baker! That seems easy enough, I'll go ahead and give it a try with Gog then. Much obliged.

I edited my post after logging into Gog and I think it is .exe

Now if you are Mac savvy, you could probably still extract from the .exe even though that is for Windows (I could).

One more question Baker, any advice on how I can access the pak1.pak file from the .exe on a mac? Thanks!

I'd download WineBottler (it's a Mac app) -- Google it.

Let's you run .exe files, works on most simple applications and since an installer is a very simple executable there is a good chance it would work.

(There also may be WinRar tools for the Mac that let you open a .exe as if it is a .zip, a different alternative should the above not work for some reason.)

Sorry, I just saw this now. I'm guessing I'd have to run some kind of program on a mac that can open executables (maybe Wine or Parallels?) then just copy the pak1.pak file? Or maybe just find someone with a PC?

lol. I'm late on your responses, sorry. I'll go ahead and try that. Thanks.

This says it can open .exe files on a Mac

Keka - the free macOS file archiver

Just info. I'd go the WineBottler route because once you use it twice, it increases your ability to get things done on a Mac.

I thought the same thing actually, pretty neat stuff. So I actually managed to make it work with WineBottler and I found the pak1.pak file along with three other pak0.pak files. All I need is the pak1.pak file or should I copy the other pak0.pak files as well? Thanks a ton!

Glad you figured it out. Bonus: Now if you really need to run a Windows application on a Mac, you know a way to do it pretty easily.

I'd copy both. The Gog pak0.pak probably is final version of pak0.pak which has a couple of very minor fixes.
