    The FTE engine recently got a new graphics preset.

    And it's the one many Quakers like best:

    Vanilla.

    As in,

    Intro videos
    Square particles
    "Nearest" rendering for sharp pixels
    Netquake physics
    No replacement content
    Faster loading times

    Not bad for a Quakeworld engine, huh.

    On top of that, there has been a whole lot of bugfixing to make vanilla Quake
    a more pleasant experience in FTE and keep it close to the original.
    From repositioning fish and scrags to stripping the weapons when using the
    "map" command, from fixing the Armagon cutscene to monsters that used to
    walk through the walls, the last few weeks have been interesting in the FTE camp.

    Quake and both mission packs should now be playable again without any major bugs.

    Give it a try!

    From the Options menu, in "Graphics presets" select "vanilla."

    And set the controls for the heart of the Quake.

    Here's some handy extras for a slightly polished vanilla experience:

    To re-enable GLQuake-style flashblends:

    gl_flashblend 1

    To turn on coronas for lava balls etc. :

    r_coronas 1

    To get slightly prettier rocket lights etc:

    r_shadow_realtime_dlight 1
    r_shadow_realtime_dlight_shadows 0

    On the other hand, if you want it even truer to software, you can also disable model lerp (ie interpolation on monsters) from the Rendering options menu. Hardcore!

        do things like csqc and other extensions still work? (this is just a graphics preset in options?)

          Yes, all engine extensions still work, including CSQC.

          Just a graphics preset (and NQ physics.)

          EDIT: Here's some more shots!





          The latter uses the coronas and realtime dlights.

            Question: Why is FTE becoming the best engine ?
            Answer: Because Spike is always there for the community. All open ears for suggestions/wishes/requests. Spike is always around in forums and channels (almost 24/7) listening to people and taking their words serious.

            He is an engine dev we, the community, can only dream about.
            (that is a German saying, hope it makes sense in english...)

                  I checked out the Win32 flavor the other night, talk about menu options coming out the wazoo haha. Extremely customizable too from what I seen, a bit overwhelming for the purpose I snagged it for, was playing airshot with Lasker 1v1 @ netquake server, I won, so I had snagged it in hopes of going to a QW server to turn the tides in his favor,quickly found myself doing more tweaking than actual just connect & play. Very powerful engine from what I've gathered, and I'm always willing to test out stuff. I just need an idea of what I should be testing,otherwise I could dick around in area's that are known to be fine and wasn't really the needed stuff to be tested.

                  although I can say this, I kept trying to use stopsound via console,it would work then just turn back on! I had to just turn the music volume down entirely to get rid of it.

                  another noteworthy issue I noticed but don't know if it was PEBKAC issue, was when I connected to cax.quakeitup.com with the FTEQuake client, I was flooding the server with

                  I filled the entire server up with those unconnected's, and didn't realize it until I closed it and fired up DirectQ. I can probably recreate the issue again,IF it's an issue at all, it could just be I'm a complete newb with this engine!

                      I use FTE with a custom CSQC to do my taxes. I call it QuakeBooks.
