6 Degrees of Freedom Quake
Hypersonic has done something that to the best of my knowledge has never been seen in Quake. The implications of this body of work (he did this both with DarkPlaces and FitzQuake using engine modification and QuakeC modification) are potentially quite large although not immediately obvious to the casual observer. Hypersonic has added 3D mouse support (a special type of mouse), the ability to navigate maps like a flight simulator using yaw, pitch and roll. Equivalent keyboard controls appear to exist as well.
