Damn what the hell? doom and doom2 still live and live much harder than quake?

Quake 3 cannot die. etc ... Classic games is things that lives forever.

Ok, I'm quite the poker player and can keep a straight face and play it low key with the best of them.
There will be an announcement on Thursday at 11 pm. One thing that will happen is "Project 23" kicks in.
Like Turtlevan suspected, the first Engine X will be released on Thursday. It won't be 4.70; I made literally a few hundred Engine X revisions. I'm trying to decide which "older" Engine X version to release to ensure versioning stability. I can't release without doing it incrementally or I will fail "quality control".
Engine X smokes ProQuake for breakfast in speed, even with the maximum settings it is faster than ProQuake by nearly double. The only engine that is faster than Engine X is DirectQ by a few hairs, but as I listen to everything that MH, Spike, R00k or metlslime say I do not personally feel I can take credit for the speed. MH, in this case, is solely the reason why ... I know to listen when MH talks about engine development. Actually, I picked up a trick from metlslime too that provides much of rest of speed boost. That plus well ... I did a lot of optimization.
However, Engine X is ultimately NOT the most significant announcement to be made on Thursday. In fact, even though I have training in journalism I'm trying to figure out how to not write a book on Thursday. This community is going to be on the road somewhere very special.

Engine X is not what gets announced on Thursday, although like stated above some version of Engine X will be released on Thursday. Engine X runs on Windows and OS X, has Kurok support and frankly I cannot remember how many other feature it has. It has a Direct3D renderer version, a hybrid version that is both OpenGL and Direct3D. It loads external textures faster than any other engine and in fact the style of Engine X has always been on the path to a free clone of our game that I received essentially a green light from Todd Hollenshead of id Software to do during the SynQ project, but I quickly realized that I couldn't really do what I wanted without taking up engine coding. If you think carefully, the DM maps in Engine X don't actually use any Quake textures in the presentation. This was always on purpose.
A strange but meaningful side-plot occurred in October. My affinity for multi platform development ended up resulting in a "hello" kind of phone call becoming "we need an experienced iPhone/iPad developer right away". I was like "Well, I don't know anything about that firsthand. But if it uses Objective-C I've been working on Macs for quite a while, and I've made stuff on Windows, Linux, the PSP, OS X." That was months ago now.
I've conducted a number of experiments, user interfaces, bizarre features but I these are going to have to be tuned. I have a list of 12 major problems that have to be solved in order for Quake to be strong. #12 eluded me. #10 was a source of angst.
More Thursday ... but the short story is we really do have the best community of the ones I have ever seen. Sure there can be be low points and down times, but these represent challenges to overcome.

There are not 23 subsystems. Like stated earlier, Engine X is not the only thing going on here. But if I explain more too much more, what will I say on Thursday? Can't kill quake. That's all there is to it. It's a nasty, mean old fucker. Its head is held together with duct tape and nails, it smells like the gym-bag of a Greek wrestler and the only way it will cooperate with you is if you shoot it in the head a few more times. (Trust me, it likes it)
Furthermore, Baker's one of the sickest, most deviant, yet brilliant quake-wranglers to ever step in the arena. His experience has left his face looking like a gnarled mess of very important bricks and he is no longer allowed within 20 feet of any building of worship.
At the end of the day, even if what Baker has to say is related to him hanging up his kevlar underwear and novelty colostomy bag, I know Quake will still be around. I know it and so does he.
No matter what, we oughta salute this scary sonavabitch.
