I believe I like them equally - but only up to Metallica Black Album and Pantera Far Beyond Driven.

In my opinion Metallica changed too much after the Black album. They still made good songs, it just doesn't feel like Metallica. Pantera lost me on the Great Southern Trendkill.

Metallica up till the pseudo grunge days.
Up to the Black album they had their thrash metal sound and on Load they went to traditional heavy metal.

Pantera. Gotta love that home-grown Texas heavy metal.

I'll admit I hardly ever listen to metal, but whenever I feel like it, this would be the album I put on.

You were saying? (I can't say I ever really got into Pantera tbh, so I'd have to go with metallica even if I only enjoy a few albums (and only a few songs from each album)

I was saying that three hours of playing f minor pentatonic scales doesn't make you good. They do have some good songs, no doubt. I probably know the words to 90% of the songs they ever wrote. I'm sure I have drawn Vic 1000 times as a youth. I am not unfamiliar with Megadeth.

I personally do not consider Megadeth to be on the Pantera/Metallica level. Megadeth might be on the Anthrax level, in my world. However, you probably haven't been listening to Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Aaron Neville, etc for the last 3 days and I can fully accept that.

@peg - that's a good album. I would go one album up to 'Far Beyond Driven'. That album was brutal.

Some ,including me,would argue that if it wasn't for Dave Mustaine, you would'nt have MetallicA without Dave, he was lead guitar. We're talking metal? We're talking guitar!

                            ~MadGypsy

Touché there, it's just a preference as I seem to be listening to a lot of megadeth lately. That and it was on at the time. (I had a crap tonne of college work to do on my graphic design course, so I thought I'd power through with some endlessly samey guitar riffs.

That said, on another note, I am actually starting to take an interest in music on a more theory side basis. So by next year I would probably have a much more matured view on the subject.

TL;DR - It's a mix of innocent naivety and preference with a touch of convenience at the time.

@mac - I could answer probably any music theory question you have.

@Mindz - Metallica dumped Dave for being a douchebag and went on to be one of the most popular metal bands ever by enlisting the far more talented (than Dave Mustaine) Kirk Hammett. Your argument is more suited to Cliff Burton. After Cliff died, Metallica was never the same again.
